Purchasing 03TT pending PPI and then Xcountry roadtrip
I purchased a modified '03 in March, 61k miles - from an enthusiast. No PPI as I trusted him after numerous phone conversations and a long test drive. He had all records, 2 owners. Drove it home, 900 miles over 2 days - was a fantastic experience.
Over 3 months, $5k in maintenance costs - I had 1/3rd expected expenses (new tires, brakes, oil change, N75, split F hose) - 1/3rd preventative (coolant lines, rebuild diverter valves) - 1/3rd unexpected (leaking power steering pump).
Would I do it differently - nope. However I would certainly recommend a PPI for the majority of people.
Don't be afraid to bail on the deal if it is not what you expect! Just because you made a one way trip does not bind you to the deal if things are not as expected.
Biggest 'issue' for me was trying to work out ahead of time how to get a temp tag as it was a private sale - the 'rules' are mind boggling. I ended up putting a plate on from one of my other cars until I got home.
Other than that, have a plan in case you do break down. Take lots of pics and enjoy! I think I smiled the whole way home.

Made it home today. Decided to drive from Boston thru upstate NY to Buffalo and then down to Oklahoma City via Columbus and St. Louis. I love this car!
