Spoiler issue again! Imagine that?

Okay guys.
Been meaning to ask - What is the typical cause for the spoiler to fail? This is the second time I am having this issue. Last time I took it into the dealer, they replaced the wire harness and both actuators. To my understanding, this was a done deal - fixed! Now the stupid thing won't even respond. I read this was a common issue with our cars and most swap out deck lids for the GT2 type. Which is probably going to be the plan because I am tired of fooling with it and the stealership charged me around 2k bucks to fix it last time. That was 2k in future mod money! Lol

Yea, they are kinda worthless. My opinion is you should remove the mechanisms and fix it down. Its a good weight reduction mod and its free.

i've sort of gone both routes on fixing this in the past. replace the entire mechanism per porsche's recommendation ( on their dime ) under warranty, and also fix it for an hour or two of labor at my indy ( which could be yours too if you're in LA )..

which means the fixed wing kit from ebay i got remains in a box in my garage unused.

you said it "doesn't respond". by that you mean, it won't deploy at speed at all? or work with the switch? or neither? there are a couple of reasons they fail, most notably they leak causing the loss of fluid from the bottom of the ram at the banjo bolts, initially causing uneven deployment, usually resulting in complete failure soon thereafter. there are countless threads on this here and if you search and read them, and match your symptoms, you'll have the answers you need. or list the symptoms. 15 guys here can tell you what it is that's gone wrong, and they'll probably be right.

in any event, it's "fixable" usually.. or there's, as you say, a perfectly good reason to get a gt2 decklid/wing..worse things can happen.

Worse things can definitely happen for sure. Hate to compain about something so minor after reading about one forum member needing to replace his motor after purchase and only driving his car 50 miles. I'll research some more. Thanks. Newbie mistake by not doing the leg work in reading past threads on the matter... To answer your question, the spoiler won't respond via the switch or at speed. Fault light flips on not long after driving it. Read about one 6speeder fixing it in the up position and removing all of the mechanisms. Thought about getting a carbon wing from misha911 and gutting the hydraulics. Sweet wing and some weight savings FTW!

yeah, you've got a ton of options, and i was definitely of two minds when mine were fixed since i too was going to use that excuse to FORCE the purchase of the FAUX! gt2 decklid/wing. should you decide to try and fix it ( re-bleed ). the instructions can be found thru a search or i can find it as i saved the DIY from another helpful 6spder, if ya need it. it can be done by an experienced diy'r or tech with an auxiliary power source to power up/down the rams while refilling them with a mix of stop leak/pentosin, or whatever that s*ht is. all i know is mine works still since rebleeding them. good luck w it.

add: that could be as simple as a failed micro switch. they are known to fail also.

Leave in the UP position at all time, disable all the electric crapiola. Then stick an aftermarket wing on the up-piece and you are in business. That is why I love my factory Aero wing - no moving parts. Nothing to go wrong.

that's an excellent solution. gt2 add on wings can be had relatively cheaply too. unlike the oem aero or gt2 stuff.

I went with the kit that allows you to fix in any position. Found it on EBay. I bought the kit that fixes spoiler 1.5" higher than normal upper position. Love the look and a cheap fix.

Snowczar, great. Any chance for some pictures and details on what and how you did it?? I bet there are going to be a bunch of members interested in this option when, not if, their tail will fail and forking over 1000 bucks is not the best solution.

I'm on my 3rd set of hydraulics.

I've had several diff types of failure

1. leaking rams
2. power contacts snapped off board
3. broken plastic block inside tube

It sounds like you have #2 - since it doesn't respond. You can take it apart and repair teh contact if this is the issue -hopefully its just a microswitch though.

If you're gonna leave it "UP" you need the fixed kit or similar workaround (see $5 mod thread on renn). The hydraulic fluid pressure is what keeps the spoiler UP, while springs in the ram bring it DOWN. if you leave it UP long enough, eventually it will leak or one side will start to fall.
