Steering fluid leak
Steering fluid leak
I have 02 996 TT, 6 speed, in cold days I have been noticing green fluid under the transmission, this is same fluid as steering pump fluid I believe, in the spring my dealer spent many hours figuring out what the problem was, however first they thought it was transmission leak, after going to the shop several times weather warmed up and the problem was gone, now its cold and leak it is back. My steering pump was making noises and there was no fluid in it back in the spring time, I filled it up in spring and it hasn’t gone down as there was no leak, has this happen to anyone? How did you fix it or will I have to replace the steering pump
how many hours did they spend not figuring out the issue? nice shop.
you're on the right path. it's pentosin. i assume your steering system "groaned" on hard turn left/right? when low on pentosin, it will not let itself go unnoticed. i can't help you with where the leak is, but obviously any pcar shop that can get under the car can tell you where it's coming from ( except possibly your current shop ). if it is leaking from the power steering res in the rear engine comp, then a new one would serve you well.
assuming you don't have any peculiarities with your clutch action, then again, you're on the right track w the ps res. GL w it.
PS. tell your shop that transmission oil isn't green.

So you have no idea where the leak is? There's no way to tell if the steering pump should be replaced without knowing where the leak is. If the pump itself is leaking somewhere that can't be fixed, then yes obviously it will need to be replaced.
Have you ever had the motor dropped from the car for a new clutch or otherwise? If so, when was this done, and was the steering fluid line replaced? I just ask because this line is often difficult to remove and in general should be replaced when the engine is dropped, so if it wasn't, then that may very well be the source of the leak.

there is a possibility your clutch slave is on its way out. The power steering fluid (Pentosin) goes into the clutch slave via a separate circuit. If the check valve is faulty, then the fluid from the PS pump will slip past and go into your clutch system.
So, check your clutch reservoir up front. If you see fluid leaking around the reservoir, then your clutch slave is shot and the reason why you see fluid near the rear main seal. the clutch slave is directly on top.
