Porsche Paint Questions

I've had my Porsche OEM GT3 bumper repainted twice now and within 3-4mos it starts looking horrible all over again.

The problem is that any little rock will cause a chip in the paint so the front of my car looks like little sprinkles of white specs. Now the hood & fenders are fine - it's just the new bumper.

Could this be from improper paint thickness(not enough), poor paint quality, or even poor paint application. I remember I asked the reputable shop which paint they use and it wasn't one of the Porsche ones (Spies-Decker sp?) but they said it was better.

I would just suck it up but I went ahead and got a GT3 rear spoiler/decklid and don't want it to be as "sensitive"

Any ideas on the prob? I don't remember my original 986 or 996 front bumpers getting marred so easily...

I would have insisted that they use Porsche paint only. Porsche paint has got to be one of the toughest paint on the market because I hardly see any chips on my car where rocks have hit the paint. Also, I believe Porsche sprays on a billion coats on their cars. I would look for another shop because what the shop means by, "which paint they use and it wasn't one of the Porsche ones (Spies-Decker sp?) but they said it was better," it's better for them because it's cheaper for them. After you get the bumper painted again, put a clear bra on and don't worry about it again.

Not enough flex in the paint. Some flex products harden after several days. The theory is install it and the paint is flexible once on who cares. The problem is rocks then dig the pain out when they hit it. By using flex product from ICI PPG etc they remain flexible all the time. The rock will normally indent the clear not tear the paint out

Lizard1,
this is very common especially the front bumper where gets beat up all the time. there's no way, regardless the actually paint quality, to be as strong as the factory paint. my advise is paint it again wait for few weeks til the paint is fully cure then do the clearbra. that's ur best bet. a good design kit with a good installer on the bumper u can't even see it.

Why not get a clear film bra? 3M maybe? Just my 2 cents.

no offense to those that have the clear bra - but I HATE seeing lines on the car. and on dark cars(mine is black), these lines will show up as I have seen a freshly applied clear bra in person.

i'll call around ATL to some other shops to see who uses "porsche's paint"

BTW, what paint am i looking for???

u will not see the lines across it if u just do the front bumper. anyway, not trying to convince u if u're not a believer. as i said though, paint does not make much difference. it's about the formula of it as well as the proper drying/curing process.

Yeah, key areas like bumper require a good paint shop. Your average body shop may look fine at first until the first contact with rock or another bumper that will ruin the paint quickly.

The old paint may need to be stripped off at this point since you've resprayed several times. Painting on top of poor paint will only fail again. After a new paint, cover it up with clear bra as there is no line on bumper. You only see a line on fender and hood.
