Smile Thinking of buying 996, questions about turbo sound

Hi all, thinking of buying a 996 911 turbo early next year, and this may be a strange question, but, with cone filters and opening up the exhaust, can you hear the turbo "whoosh" on acceleration? I think the music a car makes is as valuable as the driving experience itself. It was very prevalent in my evo, my rx7 twin turbo, my typhoon, and other turbo cars I've had, but I've searched endlessly on YouTube and can't hear it at all. I know it's more easily heard on lighter acceleration and its normally drowned out on WOT, which is to be expected. This would be a DD for me so its somewhat important for me, sometimes I'd get tired of music and just listen to the turbos on my way home from work...

This would also be my first Porsche, I just got out of a 335i bimmer (twin turbo), and from what I've read on here they are amazing machines. Also considering an m6 for that wonderful v10, and the cts-v, though I'd rather save listening to v8's with blowers to my boat..

In stock form no. But with a free flowing exhaust and intake you can clearly here the whooosh.

Of all the cars I've ever owned, and there have been many cool ones, the one with my absolutely favorite sound.....is our station wagon.

It's an E55 wagon. A wonderful combination of V8 rumble with the clearly discernible supercharger whine.

Mercedes did a fantastic job with the experience.

Best sleeper ever.

On the other hand, I find the sound of the 996 just short of annoying. I have always suspected I have an aftermarket exhaust, but never went to the trouble to find out. It's loud and tends to drone.

Still love the car

seriously if sound is what you want go with a big block....V8-V12. Flat sixes will never reach those sound qualities.

That's what I wanted to hear, thanks! Yes sound is important, but I don't want to listen to a big block for 90 minutes a day, unless I'm in my boat, then the louder the better v-12's are out of my range but that BMW v10 is marvelous with the right exhaust. The Ferrari 360 is on my radar, but that's probably 3-4 years away...but turbos can, and always do scratch my itch.

From the one clip I saw, sounded good! A catless X pipe seems the way to go on these motors

I have just installed an EBWERKS catless, mufflerless x pipe system on my 02' TT and the sound is amazing, sounds better than any v-8 ever could. I had many compliments and inquiries about my exhaust this weekend at the local cars and coffee.
