Louder Spools / Intake or Turbo?

I have a bone stock 2003 996TT and I am already planning to have some fun with "minor" mods. I just ordered a K&N Filter to replace my stock, but I am hearing a bunch of cars on Youtube spool much louder than mine. From the inside of my car I can barely hear the turbo's, although the car is a demon, so i know they are working.

What can I do to increase the sound of turbo's spooling up? I was thinking of replacing the airbox to the Agency carbon Fiber with K&N intake and perhaps the Wastegate upgrade to hit 1.0 Bar.

Make any sense? (Sorry, newbie)

You need a free flowing exhaust without cats, and a tune. Turbo's would then be more audible

JSBear - Free flowing exhaust without cats... hmm. I have watched about 25 videos with porsche exhausts to try and find one I like, the problem is they ALL sound DIFFERENT and many of the cars might have others mods that change the natural sound. I really like the Techart, but they run BIG money... Recommendations? I'm in Central Florida FYI.

Any issues with the MAF? And did you notice really any power difference? The car sounds awesome with everything stock, I can only imagine if I change a couple things. I plan to really look into an exhaust and intake. Cant splurge much more right now, just laid out the funds for the car...

I personally Never had a MAF go out..I am on my original one still, 40,000+ miles.
I put the K+N in around 14,000 miles..
But I dont over oil it and when it was knew I did rinse it off a little..I have know problem with them, I use them on all my vehicles..
As far ar power,I dont think you gain anything that would be measurable..

I did a BMC air filter, and I didn't notice much of a change in the intake noise. When I put a K&N intake on my WRX, it gave it this loud turbo inhale and blow-off sound. Even though the valves are diverter and don't blow-off to atmosphere, it sounds like they do...

Johnspeed, does your airbox sound like that?

taboo - Thats kind of what im looking for. I used to have many turbo cars and they all have the lous spool and heavy blow off valves. porsche is a new league and the divertor doesnt blow off and the turbo's spool so quietly. Even modified ones. just trying to figure best bang for my back.

I am seriously considering the K&N filter and perhaps the Wastegate upgrade for a full bar and upgrading the divertors to Agency Power. Sound good?

Personally I woudln't do the agency power divertors. My buddy's GTR has 50/50 atmospheric/diverter valves on his car, and they're really quiet, even at 17 psi. I think for the money, its not the sound you want. The only amazing blow off sounds I've heard from these cars are on kits like 911tuning.com's ski850 kit. They use external wastegates and then puts the blow-off valves on the intercoolers. They make the fluttery blow off sound.

For everyone saying that catless is the way to go, they may be right, but I'm not sure. My exhaust is a custom strait x pipe with 100-CEL race cats (Which are really free flowing, and barely pass emissions) and I can only hear my turbos spool when I press the gas slowly. They make a little whirl noise from like 2500-4k rpms, but after that its gone. My car is a gt2 with k24's so I would assume they would be louder that k16.. If it made a HUGE difference I would conciser going catless...

Edit: Heres a video of my exhaust. You can hear a little whirl, but thats pretty much all there is :P :

Reeve, I think I understand what you are looking for. Not to sound stereotypical, but I think you are wanting that Japanese pffftt blow off sound on throttle release. The 996 setup is very different, and as noted above, the waste gates aren't the same functionality. I don't think you can achieve that effect unless you do some major mods...my 2 cents.

Btw, I use the EVOMS air box, and am very happy with it!
Welcome and good luck with your build!

I have A/T-3071's with a blown out EP exhaust, once I installed the USP intake piping (alum pipe) to turbos - I hear my turbos spool and waste gates blow off all the time, and loud enough when I'm on the track I can hear them with a helmet on

Yeah, I am thinking of upgrading the Wastegate Actuators to bring the Bar up to 1.0, thinking with more boost, i'd hear the turbo's a bit more. I did the K&N and I dont even hear any difference, but I still have the stock airbox. Anyone done the actuator mod and say its worth it? They claim 80HP more and it's only $350. No that makes sense, but figure i'd ask Porsche people.
