Some observations I made about the highway

This past weekend I drove to visit a friend in Sacramento. Mapquest indicated this as a 388 mile / 6 hr. 23 minute trip. I was trying to leave early like around three , wound up being 4. So I was in the middle of rush hour and made it to my friends at about 10:45. We're talking heavy friday L.A rush hour traffic for like 40 miles. Don't know how I'm still sane.

Anyway on my way back Sunday night I left at 7:47 p.m. No traffic at all really probably similarly to what you guys might experience in the Houston area on a road trip. My observations are this :

-People do no get right for faster traffic, they sit there and let you ride them until you get left and go around. I can here them saying in their heads "I'm going the speed limit (70 mph in this case), this *** h0Le ain't passing me."

-You can be making good time and coming up on slower traffic when all of a sudden, aforementioned slower traffic decides that you have challenged them to a race.

-people will try and pass you on the right while you're going 100 mph, this may be a conflict with the first point but I don't care, speeders of this magnatude have an unspoken code - You can pass me when I get tired of going 100 mph.

- If you pass these people they will get behind you and leave their high beams on. Why ? It just makes me go faster to get away from them

All in all I made the trip back in 4 hrs 29 min. That's an average of 88 mph. Also it was on about 14 gallons of gas. 397 miles total. 28 mpg.

Guess what kind of car I was driving ??? First hint is it was a sedan.

The thing I hate the most is when you try to pass a slow driver and they then speed up...so you go behind them and surprise they slow down again/ or they speed up and cut you off

As someone who religeously follows our nations 70MPH speed limit, in the fast lane or slow lane, i take offense at .... oh enough of the bullpuckey! I drive I-5 every day, cruise set on 87 mph and sleep (lol) and yes plenty of ignant idiots on it that think passing is your challenge to them...

i agree with the membership autobahn, or at least, CHP are you listening?, pull the left lane bandits over and give them tickets for being a #(%#( idiot.

I used to do the central CA to Bay Area drive 2x a month for about a year. All I can say is that there are a lot of *******s out there.

I've done that drive many times averaging about 88 and 25mpg in my 745Li. It's probably the best vehicle out there for that type of drive at those speeds. Butt massagers, ventilated seats, sat nav, XM radio, adj extending thigh bolsters, 14 way adj seats, bi-xenon lights, automatic dimming mirrors, cooled center console to keep drinks icy cold and so on. There is nothing out there that compares for long distance cruising in extreme comfort with a buttload of passing power. Great in the twisties too with active anti-roll bars. Takes 50 mph turns flat even at 85.

Sometimes when it happens to me I wish I had a paintball gun.

Rural areas tend to have lots of rednecks and blue collar workers going to job sites. These people drive their trucks 3-5am at 80-90mph at min and think they own the road. You also have migrant workers that don't drive well and have POS cars like Hyundai Excel. Combine this with sun glare and lack of sleep, it can be dangerous.

I would not compete w some low life. Your sedan is no match w a 2 ton truck going at their max speed. I have also found Sun evening to be a good time to drive since most are having dinner.

i did this drive in my supra 2 months ago...

- people will drive in the LH lane slowly to pass trucks, and then once past the truck, they speed up 15-20mph...

- people drive in the LH lane slowly til you come cruising up @ 100mph+, then suddenly they are race car drivers and try to race... retards, i'm not racing, just going fast, and you were in the way!

- the caravans that form 10-12 cars deep to pass trucks... ugh... i usually slow down to a sane speed, pass everyone in the RH lane til i reach the truck, and just barge into the LH lane... yeah, everyone thinks i'm an *******, and i'd rather not do it, but they shouldn't be caravanning in the LH lane when they're doing more or less the same speed as the semi.

i've got to do the drive this weekend, and i always tells myself i'll stick to a sane speed (80-85), but within 10 minutes i get pissed, and then i'm cruising at 100-110.... (for those that don't know 5, it's perfectly safe to do this for most parts of the road...)

What about the huge trucks that come into the passing lane just as you come up on them? I am fully aware that because of their weight, they have to keep as much momentum going as possible but some of these *******s come into the passing lane even if you are closing on them at a high rate of speed. They don't care one bit if you have to slam on your brakes to avoid hitting them. I have been tempted so many times just to get right in front of them and hit my brakes so they have to slow down. Make them do exactly what they were trying to avoid. Then I have flashbacks of that movie "Duel".
