thankyou for your continued analysis, let me make some further observations, both sides are essentially idential re the amount of smoke and frequency, they exhibit the same smoke levels.
I have had a few days where there has been very little smoke, maybe smoking 20% of starts, then wham it goes back to smoking like a demon.
No pattern...

Maybe your car is just a smoker? Some people can't quit...

If you get to the solution (patch, gum whatever) post it here cause I'm sure at some point ill be back to follow the steps posted here too...

Hi Basic, good to hear you stopped yours smoking, what was the breather you referenced?
"which turned out to be the manifold on the top of the case for the vent/breathing to the oil tank"

Where it seals to the two case halves its just a thin flat surface, likely a common leak point on all of these cars.

I may seem slow but what part number in the diagram, you mean 1, am assuming that bolts to the block and they sealed that mating surface?

Still getting familiar with this engine

Exactly, here's a better picture, it's at the top where the 4 bolts are. Just a thin flat mating surface which had a light coating of sealant which had gone away...I used motogrey silicon which is a motorcycle thin silicon for these types of surfaces.

How come there is no light weight under drive pulley on there? LOL

I did the work with the engine in the car, stripped off all the coolant manifolds to weld them. Also replaced all of the rubber hoses and o-rings/seals. Not the easiest thing to do in the car but at the time I had no room to pull the drivetrain. After doing it I wouldn't pull the engine to do this work, not that hard just tight in a few spots.

Hi Guys...

What was the final solution to this problem? I'd like to know as I've noticed that my car does a similar thing if it stands for a while?? It does not smoke while driving at all?? Just on start up for around 5-10 seconds then it disappears??

Please help.

Thanks!

I haven't read every comment on here, but I'd bet on valve seals. Only smoking on fire-up leads me to believe oil is seeping past the seals, this oil gets wiped quickly when running so would reveals itself when engine is stopped(opposed to valve guides, rings, turbo shaft seals, crankcase venting which can show oil burning anytime).

Just an update, still not resolved, however I have found by running with the A/C always on the smoking incidence is significantly reduced to about 20% of start ups, no idea why this is. It smokes totally randomly no matter whether hot or cold. I also run at the lowest oil level prior to the warning light coming on
I am expecting its to do with the crankcase breather system, maybe some hose or gasket, will replace all that when the engine comes out for a clutch in the next year.

Are you running stock bypass valves? that night be the culprit. I have the same experience in my Supra, I replaced valve stem seals change to a diff oil, and tried many shops and dealers, no one could pinpoint the issue 2 dealers sadi I needed a new short block. Then one day out of the blue I removed the stock BOV and added and aftermarket one and that solved the problem immediatly. it seems that the BOV was letting pressure by all the time and it was presurizing the system and pushing oil thru. car had same symptoms. Smoke only at idle with AC on more than with it off no smoke when driving even at WOT . hope this gives you a clue even tough it was not a P car I beleive same concept .

Hi Mike!

Been wondering how things were. Damn thing still smoking huh? I still feel it's vacuum related. A/C is another clue? Sorry for your drama man.

Running strong though?

Sam
