Alternator - R.I.P
Alternator - R.I.P
After 26K miles, my alternator decided to quit working. The voltage gauge started to show less charge a few weeks ago, barely 13Volts.. I started to plug in the battery conditioner overnight... Situation got worse and the charge dropped down to 12V within the span of a few days. Got it replaced total bill 1,000 dollars including the overhauled alternator. It's a 2003 996TT but come-on folks, an alternator failing after 26K miles ( always garaged, no winters, no snow, little rain). They do not make them the way they used to!
Mine died a couple weeks ago. Found a hookup on a new bosch alternator for $560 and 1hr 45mins later had it back up and running. Just a heads up to people that need a new alternator do some research and see if you want to do it yourself. It's really not that hard.
I did mine a couple of months back as a precaution. Wasn't difficult at all. Do the belt at the same time.
Also, I purchased a 997 alternator (make sure its not a tip as the pulley is different). The 997 has a few more amps than the 996.
I have my old one in a box if you hard up and looking for something. Just let me know.

Wow that is a lot of coin. I bought a rebuilt one for about $300 and replaced it myself. I have a feeling it was the regulator, which I think is a common failure. I'm going to replace that and if there's another failure try putting it back in.
That's horrible after 26k only
At least you should be glad it's not an italian car, would probably cost you 5 times the money!

New to forum. Have 02' Turbo with only 13K miles and alternator showing <13 volts and dropping. Sounds like voltage reg. Didn't know reg. was a replaceable item as it's an integral part of alt. Maybe Jpflig can expand on reg. replacement details? In any event, alt. replacement sounds like it may not be as bad as I think.
i have a perfectly working low mile alternator u can have for 200$

I may take you up on that alternator, prodigymb. Want to do further checking first to confirm it is isolated to the alternator. I know it's not a battery issue (replaced yesterday) but have some concerns about cable heat resistance I read in forum. I will let you know...
That's crazy, the last two alternators I replaced were on my Supra and M3. Both had lasted over 100,000 miles on them.
I wonder if it's due to the amount of time these cars typically sit?
Later, Steve

gillrich, my problem was exactly like yours and replacing the regulator fix it.....The voltage regulator can be replaced and it is very easy. The hardest part is to remove the alternator but not too difficult.

VAGscum posted this in the Knowledge Base thread, I used it to change my voltage reg. last year. Almost guarantee that's what your problem is, the rotor assembly is very solid unit. Chances are the brushes are becoming worn and need to be replaced, these are attached to the voltage reg. unit. It's an easy job to do though, biggest issue was the alternator was fit very well into its mount, haha. Took me a bit of cursing and a beer or two, but I eventually managed to weasel it out. Put the new voltage reg. in, put her back together and Robert's your fathers brother.
