996 tt Key Switch Funky

I have a 2003 996tt bone stock with 16k.

Starting to have an issue with the ignition Key switch..

symptom - When I start the car the key seems to go to far to the right of rotation and head lights wont come on as well as A/C. Once the car is started back the key back to the left a bit.. all is normal...

Anyone ever had this experience?

Also.. what kind of nightmare am I expected to have to replace key switch if needed.. ?

thanks guys..

Replacing the ignition switch is fairly common and I don't think it's a big deal if you have some DIY ability. Do a search on ignition switch failure and you should find a bunch of info.

its a pretty common problem

when you get the new one don't have a big heavy key-ring with multiple keys hanging off it, you want as little weight as possible

Having same problem. Computer doesn't recognize key has been removed sometimes. To my knowledge the repair was only 30-40$ fix and pretty easy DIY

related question about this key switch we all know goes bad.

has anyone EVER heard of the key switch going bad and that causing the CDR23 to go on/off on its own? .. my tech has told me that, and it's happening to me though without obvious switch issues and i'm doubtful of this. if anyone has ever heard of this?? thanks. apologies to the OP for the thread diversion.

I had my entire switch fail. The key was spinning like the exorcist and would not start the car - or provide any power to the car. Apparently not an uncommon problem in the 996. The 997 switch is an upgraded replacement. Parts and labor were about $700. If your switch is starting to fail, you may want to get it replaced. You don't want to be in the middle of nowhere and have it fail.

Wow - $13, $30, $35, $40 and $700.

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things does not belong. One of these things must be the stealer, one of these things is oh so wrong.

Lol here is Naps's $11.49 ignition switch http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...49B_0295649376. Took less then 10 min to install my first time very easy install. There is a nice DYI write up somewhere do a search.
