some new ideas to reduce exhaust drone
Guys,
Today, I spoke to one of our customers that uses our 3" X-cellerator exhaust. I asked him: "Are you still running our 3" X-cellerator exhaust?" Below is his reply:
Hi John,
You bet I am. I tested your system to 600rwhp on our dyno dynamics and it made no difference to power levels from straight to muffler. I don't know what all the fuss is about in this thread. (He is referring to the other X-Flow thread).
It seems the people that are claiming the X-Flow is not optimum for power all have very large builds and are looking for peak HP numbers, regardless of sound quality or drone. The quote above is from a customer with a 600 wheel HP 996TT that dynoed his car with our 3" X-Flow exhaust and then "straight pipes" and found no difference at all in power. I am certain that this applies to the majority of people reading this thread. We have taken a lot of time to develop systems for the 996TT that sound great (which is what most people want) and perform great as well. These cars are all about enjoyment and I can tell you that there is no greater enjoyment than hearing your 996TT scream like a 997 GT3! We have done the extensive R&D and on road testing to accomplish this...it takes a lot of time, trial and error and patience to get it perfected. I can tell you from experiece, as we do it all the time, it is very easy to spend a lot of time and money on prototypes that sound like sh.. and then have to be repeatedly re-invented until they are perfected in terms of look and sound...it's not easy work, getting everything to fit right and look right is a real pain and it takers a lot of time. IMO, it would be a lot easier to hear an exhaust you like and buy it...
But the main point I would like to make is that IMO, for the majority of 996TT owners, the X-Flow is the way to go and your power will not be compromised. I know I am keeping mine on - I've tried all the other designs and would never go back to a conventional, twin can or straight pipe system. The X-Flow is the way to go for most 996TT owners - our 2.5 X-Flow is virtually drone free and sounds fantastic! Read our testimonials and see how many 996TT owners love our X-Flow systems...

How about wrapping the exhaust tubing with some type of high temperature wrap that would deaden some of this drone. Or what about using double walled tubing in the muffler construction. It would be a bit heavier but I wonder if that would contain some of the drone.
Not a bad thought. Maybe?
The exhausts with the least amount of drone seem to be OEM, RUF, Europipe, Cargraphics, Milteck. All these exhausts employ some type of dual wall construction which seems to play a part in containing the low frequency soundwaves created by the inner piping that causes drone. In other words, the exhaust tubing is encased in an outer shell, if you will. I bet if an exhaust was made with some kind of dual piping than drone would be largely contained.
@John - your exhausts definitely sound good and perform very well, and I think that your POV is the right one: why give up a beautiful sound for *maybe* 5 hp over tractor-esque straight pipes. I'd rather enjoy my car the entire time rather than the 5% of the time I'm WOT (and even then, seat of the pants... never going to notice a difference if there even was one). That's just me though, and like you said the heavy hitters that go for broke like Tim - way outta my league!!
+1, you make some pretty interesting points
So, I got some measurements on one of those prochambers - the actual crossover is 7" long in the flow path direction. So, as it sits that's a no go.

I had a Milltek 100 cell on my 6tt Tip with 650 ota hp 60-130 6.9 seconds 0-100 3.8 seconds and the car was absolutely fine around town and on the freeway. In fact it was a good all-round compromise.
Sorry 0-100 6.8 not 3.8......must have had too much of the Scottish Best.lol

I am looking into trying to get a little better flowing system with out getting to much more noise because of my future plans with different turbos.
I have the Speed Tech "quiet" exhaust and it is awesome. Nobody knows which system drone unless they sat in the car and heard every single one. My experience was with this system, OEM, OEM minus cats, and Europipe "quiet." The Speedtech is the best hands down. Has great throaty sound and gets rid of the vacuum cleaner sucking noise altogther.

BTW - we are finishing up another run of 2.5 quiet exhausts next week. I have two systems available for anyone interested in a system without the normal lead time...PM for details.

I agree that the speed tech exhaust has very little drone but sounding like a gt3?
I was at the track this weekend with several gt3rs, and the speed tech sounds nothing like a gt3. Perhaps most turbo owners have not heard a gt3 in person at full sing?
P.s I was instructing the owner of turbo w the speed tech exhaust. I heard it from the inside and outside. Sounds better in the inside vs the outside that's for sure.

This is the opposite of my trouble with the RPi setup I have now. But the more I drive it, the less of an issue it is becoming to me. I've had several people tell me just how sick it sounds, when they catch up to me at a traffic light, exit ramp or stop sign.
I think I'll keep it for the summer and see what my local exhaust guy can do about reducing the drone. He's a friend, anyway.
