Stef, I just found this out yesterday. I never got any codes or CEL. Coil packs were changed before the incident. Never had any backfires.

I am located in Vancouver BC and the OBII test will test for readiness on sensors...so if you turn the rear O2 off it will not pass.

Would someone please clarify for me whether the O2 sensors are purely emissions control devices, or do they actually help add to the car's performance?

Stef
Should I be checking soon, I always get backfire popping and gurgling, thought it was all part of the great sound

Pre-cat o2's are a/f.
post-cat o2's are wideband.

This is my assumption.

Larry, did the car feel like the exhaust seemed more muffled and the car was like holding back power, when the problems were active? My car doesn't have cats, but my problem seems very similar to yours, here's my thread: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...estricted.html

Really? Wow. That is not good. Hope that never happens here. Seen a ton of AM cat failures on boosted cars. I recommend removing them once going beyond stockish boost, or adding FI. Seen major issues as a result of cat failure.

I've used At Speed several times and Rich is the man! The guys over there are great and know there stuff. As far as secondary o2's they are just for emissions to make sure cats are working efficiently. My car has been catless a month after I bought it and as long as your flash raises the threshold for your secondary o2's meaning no cel running catless you won't have any problem passing obd 2 emissions tests.(at least in md) I actually went through my first emission test with straight pipes! Larry, glad to hear you got your car squared away finally!

Just the other way around. Pre-cat lambda sensors are WBO2's and required for proper engine operation. Post-cat ones can be deleted as long as the tune has them removed too.

The popping and gurling when you let off the gas is not the backfire I have in mind. It's when you're at full boost, say a 4000 rpm that worn plugs or worn coil packs create ignition interruptions.

Larry, so your mechanic removed the left side cat, what happened with the right side cat?
