I guess my point is that I don't see the upgrade on the 997 significant enough to warrant the additional expense. But when the 991TT comes out... I think it will be game on for two reasons: 1) I could see myself building one and 2) values of the 997.1TT will close on the 996TT enough to make the jump more palatable.

Personally speaking; I'd just stick with the car you have. It may not be as fancy or whatever compared to the 997, but it's STILL a Porsche. Don't forget that.

Go for a drive, roll the windows down, few WOT pulls; you'll recant your thoughts and enjoy your car again.

Chris.
HAHA!! Thanks for being strong brother!!

I actually ordered some new interior bits to spice this thing up a bit.

Ill post as soon as I have them on

You're welcome sir. I go through a similar struggle. I've considered selling my car and buying a 993TT instead. The conclusion that keeps me from selling my car is that the 996TT is so dang fun to tinker with. The 993TT strikes me as a car you buy for appreciation value but don't necessarily modify. I want to jack around with my car and enjoy it. The 996TT is a perfect platform to do that with!

Keep your car man!

Chris.

996 tt

I guess it's all impulse we all have that i decided to spend the $$$ on go fast mods and be done with it. 996 tt has the sleeper factor and if you don't add any exterior mods the reward is even better.

Kinda my dilemma...I can buy a killer modded 996 turbo (even with built motor) for about the same as a stock, medium to high mileage, 997 turbo...
For what I want...I think I would rather have the high HP 996 turbo...strictly for $$$ reasons...

that's honest. .. and most of our cars are faster as we now have them. and grabbing a 997t and then modding once/if the warranty is gone (?..muy importante ) will be a fun 100k project. but i have women to feed too.

honestly.. i think if i were driving more in town/streets other than rock strewn canyons?.. or had people in it ever?.. i'd have been making payments by now

I'm getting the same itch, but perhaps for different reasons. Although the 997.2 turbo does not have the Mezger motor, the trade off is PDK. Never thought I say a stick with minimal electronic suspension nannies was not the ideal choice. After taking the 2 day AMG school at Laguna, I was amazed at how fast I could go (with very little practice) in a SLS63. It was always in the right gear and the car stayed completely neutral.

Yeah, the eternal question!

For me the same thing has played out over the past few years wrt Boxsters. I've had a minty 2004 986SE from new, with about 43k on it now. Everything is perfect, and with the upgraded full leather Cocoa interior it is as nice a 986 as there ever was, built weeks before the 987 switchover.

So each time some new changes happens to upgrade Boxsters I have gotten that itch. bump to 3.4 in 07, change to 9A1 motors with DI in 09, Boxster Spyder in 11. It's like clockwork. And every time, so far, when i drove the new cars, i could never justify the price delta between a 986 and a 987, no matter how much they gussied up the 7. The basic architecture is just too similar.

But now that 981 is out...

In fact, that's why I'm buying a 986TT this week... Decided a total change was warranted.

The 997tt is a better looking car than the 996tt, more modern touches, more up to date, more classic styling with the round headlights. BUT like everybody has said... they're not very far apart in terms of looks or performance out of the box.

An alternative, and one that I'm sure I will consider when I'm ready to move on (finances permitting) is to buy an Aston V8 Vantage with the 4.3, since a quick look tells me you can already buy them with less miles for a little less money than a 997tt. Now, this is where I feel like the appeal will be for everyone else here: If their value continues to drop, and that price gap becomes greater, and thus warrant supercharging the car. The vantage with the 4.3 is a dog compared to the 996tt, the 4.7 is a lot better, but for the 20k in price, you could supercharge the 4.3 (without building the motor), and putdown somewhere near 500whp. Totally different car than the 996TT, and an enormous upgrade in aesthetics (IMO).

I'm just looking at it as say 70k for a vantage vs 85k for a 997tt of the same year/miles. There is 15k freed up to do whatever you want right there, and still be coming in at the price of the stock (or previously modified) 997tt.

brace yourself for some ****ty music..

no idea wtf a stage 4 996tt is in this video, but it sounded like it went through the gears fairly well

you guys are smokin some good stuff... give me some
the 997 is superior in every single way. styling.. handling.. the awd system is real not phony. a real LSD, electronic suspension, gen 2 pccb's... but most important.. by far and none.. style... its got 993 headlights !!

i paid $71k for my (997)turbo. it's completely loaded (even has backup sensors !!) i belive 154 msrp. i'll post specs and more info next saturday when it gets trailored in.

i still have my 996 as i bought the 997 because it was too good of a deal to pass up.
my 996 will probably sell for mid 30's.

the 997.1tt IS the last of the best 911's.

also rates are low as hell right now. i am paying 1.99% through BOA 60 month and theyre financing taxes. i just finished paying off my 996 two months ago. it was a no brainer..

this is my actual car in the pic.. the wheels are being powdercoated a different color.. i'll post a ton more info next saturday. i'll be back in ny

and its NOWHERE near a 20-30k jump. dean is right.
more like 40-50 EASY.

ive already spent almost $11k out of pocket on brand spankin new carbon clutch and gt2 gearset and a motorsport diff for the car... BEFORE I EVEN TOOK DELIVERY... all sitting under a blanky at tims shop.
but its worth it on a car like this. this really will be the last of the best 911's.

you deserve it lol. we all do, though but you've hit on a very salient point, and although my intention is if i do get one ( not sure how i'll be able to stop myself ) i will wait until they are in the range of my earlier tt's purchases and i'm a cash buyer. i've been advised not to make purchases of a depreciating asset on credit, but i digress..

the real impediment is that i drive this current car through boulders/pebbles, and all manner of canyon/mountain debris. while it may not seem like a big deal? i would be lamenting every single rock chip sound/noise whatever. with this *old* car, but as it is now? i just hammer down,.. and thru it

i'm not sure i'd roughhouse a low mileage and pristine 997t. but it is, after all, only money again. props.
