Found a screw in my tire...

Tread was too low to patch it Soooo, 4 new tires are on their way to my indy...

It's not leaking, and I've got a compressor in the car. You think it's safe to drive to and from work for a few days? Tires are supposed to arrive Thurs 4/25...

Yeah...they could _barely_ pass inspection when I bought the car...not so much anymore...

I wouldn't drive it, unless you plan to replace the tire. If you don't track the car, it probably can be patched professionally based on the location.

Yeah, all 4 are getting replaced (Thursday hopefully). It's been on my to-do list, and this is just the excuse to do it. Also, they said they couldn't patch it because there wasn't enough tread left... It's my DD, so I just need to drive it about 30 mi a day to and from work...I'm thinking it'll be alright? Gonna check PSI tomorrow morning and if it's holding, I'm doing the commute.

don't take out the screw

just leave it there and drive it until you replace the tires. just check the tire pressure before before driving. keep it under 70mph.

I am surprised they can't temporarily patch that. I had the same situation when I bought my car, except there was less tread than you have. Ordered tires and they patched it for the few days before new rubber arrived from tirerack. Told me to take it easy. Mine was a slow leak that had gone almost completely flat on the transport truck, so perhaps not to apples to apples.

Ether way, I wouldn't be too concerned running it for a few days. Take it easy and check tire pressure before each drive. Not worth damaging a rim due to low tire pressure.

How the...yep, going for Hankook V12s to replace all 4 though. I don't track it, and it's my DD, so I'm going the cheap(er) route.

Yeah...I think the place was just trying to sell me 2 new rears. I guess I looked like a sucker. Might get a plug kit just in case, and keep it in the car...I think I might trust a plug over an 11 year old spare... Didn't look like it lost more than 1 PSI over night, so I think I'm in luck for now.

That should be pluggable and patchable. Shop likely won't do it due to the treadwear for legal/liability issues, not because it can't be done.

V12s great for street and good value. Not worthy of tracking as they howl and slide, but good for learning the cars behavior. Have used these at rain/wet events several times.

Funny what tire shop will do. Had a nail in my previous set of hollow twist. Told me I was at 3/32 and could not patch. I ordered new tires and while at it new wheels. After install of the shoes on the vehicle, the manager offered to patch original set for me for free. I still use them on and off for the last 3 months no problem. I put on the old set when I'm out data logging to tune

If you want to continue to drive the car I'd advise you plug fix that tire.

While the tire didn't lose any air stationary the screw probably represents an air leak. Dare you to remove the screw. I suspect when you do you'll know...

Or just spray some soapy water on the area and look for bubbles forming around the screw head. And screws/nails are like ****roaches. There's never just one... Check the rest of the tire very carefully and the other tires too. As tires wear they are more likely to pick up stuff.

Oh, before you remove the screw mark the location of the screw very accurately. It is not unknown that after a nail/screw to be removed and one is left looking for where the darn thing was. Sure one can add air and then search but best to just mark the spot.
