Coolant Hose Failures in the news!
#32
I was a victim of this today on a spirited run with some friends. Only 10 minutes into our day, hose blew coolant EVERYWHERE! Will fill out form now. Had a Lambo behind me that said he smelled coolant and saw the burst. Had to get flat bedded 1.5 hours.

Sorry this happened to you, too. Seems like it's happening more frequently, or people are being more vocal about it, or both.
Stick to the facts in your report, be objective. Pics may help if you've got them. Did the driver behind you roll through your car's coolant?
Enjoy your conversation with the investigator, he seems like a good guy and well informed.

Hi,
I am with a law firm that is looking into reports of catastrophic coolant leakage in Porsche 911s, similar to what you have been discussing. If you have experienced this issue or are interested in the investigation, please feel free to email me at emo@girardgibbs.com, or give me a call at (866) 981-4800. You can also visit our website http://www.girardgibbs.com/porsche91...investigation/.
Thanks,

I called and had a few minutes of discussion with Ellen. She is legit as I inquired of her firm’s involvement. Doses she represent PCNA or?? From what I can tell, there's been an accident involving a Porsche which had a catastrophic coolant loss on public road. This coolant lost caused possibly several cars too crash too. My basic Business Law class of tells me that Porsche driver could be liable to legal action against them. If you've had a failure- please do it for the safety of the public and yourself / loved ones that might be in the car and email / call Ellen.
Thank you
Thank you

It's sad, but some times that's what it will take to get some of these big
organizations to take ownership of their errors vs on the backs of their customers

A pipe split is not what most owners that have coolant loss are experiencing, that split is the first I've seen. The main issue is that the coolant pipe comes loose from the block due to the adhesive failing. Even if the adhesive didn't fail in your case, you'd still have lost all your coolant obviously. Was that pipe up against something in the engine bay that was rubbing that spot and possibly caused it to wear thin?

From autoblog
"A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances," NHTSA said.

...and possibly even more to the point for us 996tt owners..
Porsche identified a manufacturing quality issue with the supplier?s application of adhesive to coolant pipe fittings that resulted in elevated failure rates in approximately 6,800 early production 997 generation vehicles (MY 2007 and early MY 2008). ODI?s analysis of field data showed that the age-adjusted failure rate for these vehicles was approximately six times greater than MY 2001 through 2005 996 generation vehicles and MY 2008 through 2011 997 generation vehicles built after a process improvement for adhesive application was implemented by the supplier.

This a simple formula all auto manufacturers apply (source: Fight Club although thoroughly researched):
Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, there won't be one.
I am all for this but I have never seen a recall initiated 14 years after a model was introduced.
