Why you should have your ecu flashed!
Why you should have your ecu flashed!
After the PCA race at Putnam Park in Indiana a week ago, I thought I'd share a video with you. We were heading for second when my shifter linkage had come apart. After a quick fix we ran the reverse starting order Top Gun race and posted fast lap. The race conditions were about 90+ degrees and 60% humidity.
We were able to cut our lap times from 1:15.5 last year to a 1:12.2. The changes made from last year consist of Evo Stage 3 tuning and Forgeline's 10 spoke 9.5 x 18 fronts and 12 x 18 rears. We're now running 265's instead of 245's and 325's instead of 305's.
I recently purchased a nice set of Intercomp scales for corner balancing and can't believe the difference this has made. The Moton's are extremely adjustable and make it easy to balance.
If anyone is interested in following the path my car took you can PM me. I certainly don't mind sharing set-up if it helps another TT owner.
Evolution Motorsports, Forgeline Wheels and Moton, you guys are the best.

Ken,
I believe those are the one's. You can see a half way decent picture of the car with the new wheels at Wheel Pic
I'm running Pirelli slicks which come in different compounds depending on your set-up. Since I still have AWD I chose Pirelli because their tire diameter's, front to rear, are very close .

We are very proud to be supplying the tuning for Rick's car. One thing he is leaving out is that there is one hell of a driver behind the wheel of that Stage 3. After seeing this car in person I have to say that is one of the nicest TT race cars I have seen so far. The carbon fiber work is unreal. Anyhow, glad that everything is working out great and thanks for posting the vid.....

A few curious questions to ask, if you'd be so kind...
Why'd the linkage go out? (What broke, and is it recurring?)
Also, how much power do you have VS the other competitive cars in the field? And how does the car weight compare to comparable finishers/performers?
Have you run tire tests and data to compare braking, cornering g's and sector speeds with the different tire sizes by any chance? I've seen some instances where tire width was added without additional downforce, so tire temps didn't reach optimal levels. Everything's a compromise in some manner, so what did you gain with the new sizes and what did you give up? Tire testing is pretty fascinating IMO.
Thanks.

Thanks Nate and everyone at EVO, your knowledge about the 996 TT and customer service are second to none!
Ryan in SD,
I started racing sports cars in 2000 after taking a 3 day Skip Barber racing school. Since then, in '02 I ran a full season with duPont Motorsports in WCT. I competed in SCCA Nationals for 3 years, ran the Runoffs 3 times and raced a bunch of different types of cars.
Super D,
First time for the shift linkage and it was a result of not having it tight. I tightened it and it was perfect for the 20 lap race 45 minutes after this race ended.
My car stacks up like this: it weighs 2880 w/o driver it's putting down somewhere in the 400+ range to the wheels(awd). The driver in the #17 car in front of me is an accomplished Speed WCGT driver who was driving his '02 WCGT prepped Cup car (2700 lbs) 400+ to the rear wheels. The guy in front of him had a 630 rwhp Cup converted twin turbo RWD that was probably a little lighter than us (no awd). I'm running without ABS, the Cup Cars have it.
I really just try and compare my lap times to times from previous events at that track and try and go faster with the intentions of bringing the car back in one piece and finishing up front.
I've not tire tested with this car yet but have determined based on width's and diameter's(because of AWD) that the above mentioned tire sizes are the ones for me. I also have a 63" GTRS wing being mounted this weekend which will change handling characteristics.
Hot Rod Guy,
I think I'm the only AWD turbo running in PCA but know of 2 other's running in WCGT with limited success. My intentions for building this car was to race a 4-5 race schedule in WCGT but the car has taken longer to develop, I think we're almost there.
jro,
Glad you liked it.
Thanks,
Rick
