I dunno.......if you're 27 and still have unpaid student loans, especially as much as $50k, then I can see where your wife is coming from.
It doesn't make sense to pile on another $80k in debt.... And then with the birth of a new kid, priorities will probably change, and purchasing your own place to live might pop up on the horizon.
If you didn't have the $50K debt (plus whatever you might owe on your current car), I would say screw the wife and get the car, but it sounds like waiting a year and paying off the debt would be the half-intelligent thing to do.

I'd rather cuddle with my fuzzy twins than a controlling wife... any day.
Besides... wives are easy to replace. You loose the twins because your wife hid them in a drawer and won't tell you where they are; you'll find them MUCH harder to replace than the wife.

you'll always be poor if you can't control your urges to spend beyond your means. pay off the loan first. invest the remaining money wisely. stop looking at these cars until you have your priorities in order. get a bimmer for now.

Tough one. With a child on the way, things change significantly. If it wasn't for the child, I would probably have a different take on this.
80K tax free? Nice.
Save up some dough. The TT will be there in 6 to 9 months and you will feel better about it. I've always believed that if you even slightly feel that it's wrong, it usually is. Go with the gut.

Yep, spending an entire year's salary on the car sounds like you're pushin' it. If you don't own a home yet, deal with that first. Then when you do your loan qualifying, get the car amount covered and amortize the cost and enjoy the favorable home loan rate as well. That way, you keep liquid for necessities. Growing families gobble up money, it's just the way it is. Have fun with the cars, just maintain a decent balance with all people in the picture well supported and comfortable. After all, you didn't get married and start a family take away your life's joy, right?

My wife is pregnant with our first child... I am 27 years old, make $80k a year tax free and can afford to dump 80k into a used 2001-02 porsche turbo but the wife says I should hold off and pay my student loans ($50k). I live in Germany and experience the autobahn every day with my 350z. I mean **** I drive 135 mph to work and its legal!
BUT the problem is that I want my dream car a 996TT. So as my title suggests, "What happens when the wife says no to your new car?"

I think I agree with Joe. My wife didn't agree with my purchase, but I don't agree with all her jewelery purchases, over 100 pairs of shoes and tons of cloths. Not to mention $1000 worth of coffee a year, going to fancy dinners that cost $150, etc,ect. I figure she is still ahead of me in the spending area. That being said I do own a house and business already, and you are young.
