New Motor Trend article on next 997TT

Has anyone seen the new Motor Trend article on the 997TT. They say that it will be introduced with just over 500hp at the Paris Show. According to the Porsche engineers they spoke with, the engine can easily handle 700hp. The only problem is cooling and the transmission would have a hard time at that power level.

Have not seen it but they have to come out with 500hp to keep up. Maybe more with a factory powerkit or "S" model....

Tuners will be ahead of the factory as usual though and cheaper...

I'll keep my 996TT for now and buy the 2nd year of the 997TT model after some bugs are out and the tuners have some experience with the car...

Well I know the estimate for the horsepower keeps going up. Initial reports pegged it at 460hp with the 'S' coming in near 500hp. Then a few months ago the base number was expected to be "near 500hp" but not quite there. Now it appears the base TT will be just over 500hp and the 'S' will come online a bit later with even more power (550+hp). Pretty good stock.

What would interest me MUCH more would be if every few months we kept hearing the WEIGHT was going down. I know Porsche has pretty much decided that the TT is a cruiser now but I have to admit I care alot more about weight than hp (aftermarket can always add hp). If they announced the TT was to come in at 3000 lbs. I would run out right now and put down a deposit (as it is I will probably wait till the second year production).

Correct. As long as you have AWD, that instantly adds another 150-200lbs.

The curb weight for the S (6spd and Tiptronic) is below:

Curb weight for 997 S:
6spd - 3,131 lbs
Tippy - 3,219 lbs

It won't get ANY lighter than those and maintain a reasonable cost. Figure 3400+ for the 6spd and close to 3500lbs for the Tippy.

No way to keep the weight down with 4wd, multiple airbags etc... They would have to go to all carbon body panels etc... That would offset some, but the cost to do so would increase the price such that it would not appeal to as broad a market.

Most of you would take 500 hp and 3,500 lbs and be happy! The rest need a GT2 and some good aftermarket body panels!

End of the day Porsche's current management is trying to build a car company, not a sportcar/racing company which it was in the past. The P2 was just to appease the nay sayers on racing, it was the cheapest solution to say - hey we put out a new race car, knowing that they will have a limited commitment to develop it and run it. They will leave that to the private teams.

The Company is on the right track to maintain a finacial sound balance sheet. I just hope they don't loose there way on what cars they build. They need to continue to build the special hard core cars for the old faithful!

Ohh goodie! Someone hurry up and buy an 06 Turbo so that in 3 years I can buy it from you at a "nice" depreciated price that I can afford.

Ps.-- Order for me a Seal grey, 6spd, full lthr black, and navigation.

How can the next TT be an lighter when all the focuses are things like, heated seats, nav, cell phones, things like that, every pound counts. Want light? Buy a GT3.

Not that I am an expert, but how could they ever get the weight down to 3000 lbs? Impossible.

I like the fact of more hp. More is always better (except weight)

There was an article a few months back in MT on why cars are getting heavier. With new safety regulations, & the public's request for more amenities it is adding weight to our cars. About the only thing left for them to do is switch the steel body to aluminum. That could drop 100-200 lbs. off the car without dramatically increasing price. Would require massive re-tooling of the factory though. Carbon fiber would be ridiculously more expensive than current materials, so would making titanium parts.

Porsche is the the best at digging in your pockets for the "S" version. Not really cool.

From the specs it looks like the carrera has slightly larger pistons for a about 200 more cc's of dipalcement. COST? only 10K.

Give us a break.
