ECU Flashing Issue - Any thoughts?
ECU Flashing Issue - Any thoughts?
This seems a bit odd, I was hoping someone on the board may have some insight or thoughts as to why this is happening.
When I purchased my vehicle, it had a Giac Flash with their flashing tool. This is a dongle that allows you to switch between Stock, Pump and Race maps by pressing a button on the dongle. It's a pretty quick switch, takes 2-3 seconds to switch maps.
Fast forward, a year later the car is extensively modded and required a retune. I send my ECU out to Markski @ 911tuning and he does a bench flash for my Alpha 28 setup.
Since we used a conservative tune, we decided to use his flashing tool to update the map after logging. Here is the issue.
-I can read the map
-Markski receives the map, adjusts, sends back.
-I upload map to flashing tool
-I try to write map to the ECU through flashing tool / OBDII port, it errors.
We've tried two different flashing units. It seems to be an issue specifically with my vehicle / ECU, but I am not sure where to start. Remember, he was able to bench flash the ECU and the car is running on a good baseline map, makes good power, just needs minor adjustments.
I've e-mailed GIAC, they may have something on the ECU that's preventing a new flash file from being written. I am waiting for an answer.
This post is to get insight on why this may be happening, not to say you should have went with xyz tune. I am happy with Markski's methods and the tune he's provided thus far. I am trying to determine where my vehicle / ECU may have an issue and if anyone has any idea on how to clear and/or troubleshoot.
I was also informed that I can do a K-Line check through a durametric? This is supposed to check the lines to/from the OBDII port to the ECU. I have verion 6.x, I have to e-mail them as well.
Thoughts/Suggestions?
Thanks!

Right. I didn't want to do this until I've put in some effort to fixing the problem. Ultimately I may end up sending him my ECU 5 or 6 times until the flash is where I want it... however, I need to fix the issue as I'd like to switch between a 91 and a 100 map easily.
I am not flashing it through a laptop, I am using a handheld tuner.
I can read the map just fine, can't write it.
I can use the durametric to log just fine, only problem I have is writing via the flash tool.

If we can write it on the bench and then it doesn't do it on car it may be the connections...
but we would have to try that first....

i also had a giac tune when i got my car. move to epl tune , flashing cable and secure server. make 3 tunes on the car. after chasing gremlins for months i swap out the dme and receive a new file to load. car wont take the tune. try 20+ times without success. send my laptop , 2 dme's the cable to epl and they have everything checked with no issues and bench flash the dme. car runs fine and im awaiting a new file to flash.
btw my durametric cable works fine every time i use it
waiting on the file to see if i will be able to flash unknown at this time if i will be able to

Yeah, from what I gather, bench flashing is ideal, but the most inconvenient.
Flashers are hit and miss, though 100's of people use them without problems.
My dilemma is the multiple maps, I want to be able to switch between them. Only way to do that is a separate eeprom and a switch. $$$$$$$$$$

GIAC did use several difernet things to lock their ECUs. Its most likely that. Just send it out and have it benchflashed again or replace it. I might have a spare.

I agree, TurboTodd. Nothing wrong with Markski or his tune. It's an issue with my ECU/Car.
Prodigymb - I can do the benchflash method over and over again until it's right. Still can't swap maps. I want to rune the same boost level with advanced timing, for 100. Unfortunately, the cost of a replacement ECU + programming from dealer isn't feasible, I could also run into problems - like 32krazy.

I flashed it back to the stock setting on the GIAC flasher before i sent it to Markski. However, the stock setting on the flasher wasn't a "stock" map, it was a modified stock map.
Even if it were flashed back to stock, I don't think it would help.
GIAC says that once you bench flash it, their tune is gone. However, I don't think they are very forthcoming. There are probably other things done that they will not disclose or mention.
I have limited options, especially for a dual-map tune that I want to toggle between.
