rebuild tranny - where ?
rebuild tranny - where ?
Hi all , now I'm sure it's a tranny , I pulled the drive shaft out , drove the car , the noise still there on the 3rd gear only , the rest gears are fine , so I think the best way would be to rebuild transmission and cheaper , because thats the only 3rd gear set to replace , if I'm wrong please correct , the big question where to do the rebuild , other options are welcome . I will appreciate any help
ps is it possible to get the transmission out without pulling the engine out ?
Thanks !

you can pull the trans without pulling the motor. reinstallation is a bit tougher getting the clutch fork lined up but can be done.
contact tim941nyc from here. he has built more trans in more combos than anyone around. he might be able to help and build you a new gearset that helps you enjoy the drive even better.

I already sent him pm , 1300 is way off from what I have , the current power level stock trans should handle , but it didn't

expensive to fix. I hate a slight knocking sound that i thought was the drive shaft. Definitely in third.
Just had my gearbox pulled. Third is blown, and pinion and crown is damaged. Lesson, do not continue to drive. I was just quoted 9K to rebuild, which included 997 1,2,3 and steel syncros on 3,4,5,6. Long story short, i have a new gearbox on the way
PM me if you want more details

eric at this place http://www.gboxweb.com/index.html gave me a tutorial on 96g'box's and i never even gave them the job. but would in a minute had it not been cpo warrantied work. same folks that make that "detent" stopgap.
gt gears http://www.guardtransmissionllc.com/ is also highly recommended for porsche gearbox rebuilds/upgrades. can't go wrong with either shop. GL w it.

Here's an idea worth looking into. You can get a 996 C2 transmission for pretty reasonable prices on ebay and such, are the gears and other parts interchangeable with the all wheel drive version?
