Disabling DRLs

Hello

I'm trying to disable the DRLs in order to install LEDs. I've searched around and sounds like the only way to do this on a 996 is to remove the relay. Apparently, the DRL relay is the only double-sized one (located closest to the driver's door above the fuse panel). So that I don't mess things up, can anyone confirm this? In order to remove, just pull outwards?

Lastly, it seems with this relay removed, this also disactivates the high beam. Is there a way to retain this function? In other words, is there a relay that I can replace much like the one in a car without DRLs?

Thanks in advance.

My DRLs disabled themselves this year, not sure how or why.. All lights work perfectly normal via the switches; low, high, turns, parking lights when I switch, etc. The low beams are just no longer permanently on. Wish I knew why in case there is a problem but so far all is well.

To be honest I would like it to be working like normal now that my car is this way. Why do you want to disable the DRLs?

Thanks for your reply.

My plan is to install the Philips LEDs for my DRLs, that's why I'm trying to disable the stock DRLs.

I have read about pulling the big relay and not being a big deal. Why not yank it and report back what the up/downs are? Worst case just pop it back in.

Do you have a link to the Phillips LEDs?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your comments.

DRLs have been mandated by law in most provinces in Canada starting about 20 years ago. This may be going state-side (if not already) but likely something each state will determine on it's own. While it may not be the law in some states, some car manufacturers have been supplying this feature to US cars to reduce variations in production.

So back to the 996 DRL relay, I removed it this morning and seem to do the trick. Low beams (xenons) are no longer running when the car is on. As pointed out, other functions like turn, parking lights still work when switched accordingly. High beams (when signal stalk pulled towards you) still works. Now for the LED installation...

King James: are you referring to this thread for the Philips LEDs?

Yeah that's what I was referring to. The Phillips daylight 8 look pretty cool. Is that what you're looking at using? They are pretty bright, wonder if they dim at night so they are bright in the day and dim out when headlights go on.

Post up here as you go would like to see how it ends
