Changing fenders to shed weight

I thinking of changing the fenders to shed weight. I believe the oem ones are made of steel. Getty design has fenders available in frp or carbon.

I don't know. I would imagine its more of a weight savings than going with a cf hood. The fenders on a 996 are quite large.

Including Parts + labor + paint venture to say on cost per unit weight basis, bonnet is way cheaper. Also with non-steel fenders, you run significant risks of cracking, especially with street driving.
one fender aftermarket in FRP is well over 1000USD. Genuine parts at least 2-3x's the cost. CF up to 2x's cost of FRP...

depends on maker i.e. type and quantity of materials used. dry carbon would be the lightest but $

CF fenders for less weight is not a bad idea dea, but the net savings are so small that I assume you have already done the very basics of weight reduction for a streetable car;

- lightweight wheels
- lightweight interior
- lightweight battery
- CF doors (German firms make also 100% OEM type of CF doors requiring no cage but giving you 20kg off)
- CF roof (if you have a sunroof!)
- CF hood

Because in my data a stock front fender is 5.7kg each.
Cargraphic CF front fender is 2.3kg each
Total of 6.8kg weight saving available with Cargraphic parts. I say do at least the stuff above before thinking about cf fenders.

Thank you for the reply. I thinking stripping the interior and getting lighter wheels would be the way to go.

Check out the weight thread at the top of this sub forum. Lots of ideas. Fenders won't save you a ton. Take the carpet out, or if you want to keep the carpet, get a spare one, shave the sound deadening off and put it back. Removal of the sound deadening is something like 30 lbs.

A CF hood vs stock is more like 20-25 lbs. Getty has those. He also makes a very lightweight resin material that isn't as expensive as CF. Also consider changing out the rear decklid and wing, lighter clutch/flywheel assembly is worth a lot of weight, exhaust, wheels.

All of this is mentioned with approx. weight loss, much of which confirmed in the thread.

Not yet. Just did rwd conversion. Next on my list of things to do is a speed tech 3.0 x-flo exhaust and possibly a mild tune with different diverter valves.

I sent an email to Getty and Mark replied. He says there's a 1" wider fender in the works that is compatible the oem bumper. I may just change the fenders to go wider and get the frp hood if it sheds significant weight. I think their gt2 frp front bumper is lighter than oem.

I would like to shed another 100lb. My purpose is really for nicer driving experience. My previous sports car was a '04 STi so the 996tt feels porky to me. Once I took out the front diff and axles, I immediately noticed the difference in weight.
