Camshaft position with respect to crankshaft

I am getting these codes:

P1358
Camshaft adjustment bank 2 Below limit

P0022
Porsche fault code 325 - Camshaft position with respect to crankshaft bank 2

The car runs great. Has plenty of power and is nice and smooth. However if I clear the codes then run short tests while just idling the codes will pop back up.

Here are some screen shots of the Durametric while at idle that may be useful.

Position 1 will move around a few hundredths while idling. Position 2 just sits at 15.

Is the shape of these two supposed to be very different?

Can anybody make sense of this? I manually actuated each banks valve timing (but not lift) while idling and each made a noticeable impact on idle quality so I am guessing this is not a matter of an actuator working or not. Could it be a weak tensioner? How about those brackets that are known to crack that hold the actuators in place?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes you better look at the solenoid bracket on the top of the cylinder. If the bracket is broken and the solenoid get out of position you will get this code because the solenoid is not working properly….This solenoid is for the lift of the intake valves. Between 3.6mm or 11 mm opening...

So this solenoid is just for lift? Hmmm... I think this code has to do with the timing being retarded so maybe it's not that. However, given that brackets reputation I should probably check it anyway. Thanks for the pics.

Yup, he seems to know his stuff. If I can just find that DME service manual he is referencing I think we'll be able to figure this out.

Finally fixed it. It was the camshaft position sensor. Interesting note, there was never a CPS code.

Good job!!! I'm happy for you. In fact it is interesting to see the sensor can be at fault in this case.... Thanks for closing this thread!

Thanks. Me too. After I verified the solenoid was not the issue I started to get worried... but I was still finding it hard to believe that the cams were advancing what it said and still running great. I just didn't think the CPS signal seemed realistic even though I did not get any codes. I hate to just throw parts at an issue but I had a pretty good feeling about this. Bought a new sensor today and installed it. Let the car heat up then put it through its paces all while monitoring on the Durametric. It was clear within the first minute that there was an improvement. By the time the car was warmed up and my signals all still looked good I became much more optimistic and my test drive verified the fix.

That Durametric is an invaluable tool.
