3rd and 4th are on the same slider so that can explain why the 4-3 shift is ok. I feel it is a syncro issue. Why? As the syncro heats up it expands (stock is brass) when it expands the syncro no longer provides the friction (it's a tapered fit) needed to synchronize the shaft and gear speeds.

Mine starts that way as well. It's now difficult to get into at times in first and second in addition to third. Additionally, I can feel a "bite" during most shifts above 3,000 RPM's. But no grinding. So definitely the synchros.

Unless it has been done recently you might try a transmission fluid change. My Turbo tranny has been just fine but at least once the Boxster tranny started exhibiting shifting difficulties when up to temp. I thought the transmission was just shot but a fluid change eliminated the behavior. Now after the fluid change the transmission can be a bit balky to shift when cold but that is a temporary thing and I can live with that. The Boxster transmission has 275K miles on it now.

The times I have had the fluid changed in my cars' transmissions I have only had the factory fluid used so if you decide to stray off the reservation regarding transmission fluid the benefit of a fluid change -- *if* there is any benefit: No fluid can fix worn out transmission components -- may not be present.
