HELP! New Fuel Pump broke twice within a year!

Car is 2002 996 TT. I replaced the fuel pump with a brand new one in 2013/2 and it broke again on 2013/6 and had it replaced with a brand new pump. Now 6 months later it just broke again, now in the garage...

I did a little search and didn't come up with much. Has anyone had repeated fuel pump failure in their TT? Could the incoming power from the relay frying up the pump motors?

I'm working with the mechanic to make sure that we don't have the same problem re-occurring...

Thanks a lot for your help!

D.

I would check for obstruction in fuel line causing excessive back pressure. Could cause over heating/burning out of pump I will assume fuel filter is clean. Could be spike in voltage but I doubt it.

Fuel pump going out once is pretty rare but it happens. Fuel pump going out twice smells fishy to me....

Are you sure it is the pump? And not first the pump went and and now the hose split? Or in the other order. I have seen quite a few dead factory pumps. Hard starting is a sure sign.

pump

I am on my third fuel pump. First one the u-shaped rubber hose split. Second one, died after four years. Third one now having warm start problems, which tuner says is a bad check valve, so I will salvage a check valve off dead pump.

Note that if you have a cheap hose or valve go, Porsche does not sell individual components, so many replace the whole pump when really a $3 part is shot.

Lesson here, is keep all of your old parts for salvage.

i'm going with "hose split" too. it usually isn't the pump but the line. lousy deal.

Yeah, I'm very sure is the pump (the motor) not the hose or the valve. When replaced, the entire pump is always replaced, not just certain parts.

Gas filter has been replaced as well.

The car just all of a suddenly lost its power. There hasn't been an intermittent failures or signs.

Everything seems normal when it's replaced... just can't believe two brand new pumps just went out like that....

Hi, Winnigt2, Can you explain a bit more? I don't fully understand. I'd like to relate this to my mechanic in the way I can understand. Thanks!

if the return line behind the fuel pressure regulators has not enough retournflow it is possible the fuelpump has to work hard and fuel goes hot

check the the returnline from the fpr out or fuel cooler to the fuelpump basket ...you only need air to check it (blow carefully out and check if it have free retourn....easy to do and no cost of money)

check the fuelpump filter mesh at the pump if it has a free flow..

hope that helps a little

Thanks.

I do hear a momentary break (very brief) in the engine roar, especially when I accelerate...

best way is to check your fuel pressure at the fuelfilter, there is a valve to check the fuelpressure ...at standstill 3,8 bar and under boost 3,8bar plus boost 0,8 bar = 4,6bar..... and at idle under 3,8 bar...

other failures are possilble

Thanks! I'll ask to have it checked out. What other failures may still be possible? I figure the chance of having two bad parts in a row is really slim...
