new guy question about ecu tuning
my father in law owns an 03 turbo and was looking for alittle more power over stock, ive talked him into installing an ipd plenum and an evoms vflow intake purchased from a fellow member here. the question i have is will we need to do any ecu tuning with these simple mods or should the factory ecu be able to compensate enough with the increased air flow? sorry if i sound like a noob, i definitely am, ive built a few turbo hondas but have never played with anything like a 911

Honda is nothing like a 911 turbo it cost a lot of money to build these cars. IPD will do nothing for you unless you have big turbos. I would start buy getting Markski 911 tuning flash or Tony EPL Flash then add 70mm exhaust and upgrading your clutch. Right there in those 3 parts your looking at 8,000.00 that will get you around 430awhp if you have the K16s or if you have the k24s you will be around 450awhp,
Agreed with above...randomly adding components will not get what you want. In fact do not use the EVOMs air box unless you want to buy a bunch of MAFs. Decide what you want in the end and buy components that integrate with this. Exhaust, wastegates, flash to start. Stock clutch can handle the power depending on how you drive...
^ as per others above. throwing parts at the car piecemeal will get you mixed results and often lead to issues that will confound you.
its best to begin in some kind of time honored and proven sequence eg exhaust/tune and build from there. tune and exhaust alone will add roughly 75+ hp should always be the first "step".
"matched components" are the key to success. not simply adding parts.

get a flash on the car and I suggest you stop buying used parts first until you get familiar with what your getting into.. for example, if the used IPD plenum does nto have the check valve on it you just created a massive boost leak and are pressurizing your oil cooler... BAD idea....

Use Markski's tune he knows what he's doing. Follow his steps and you will only have to build your car once.

IMO,, forget that stuff above stuff and go with a tune first and then an exhaust..
That tune should really keep him happy with that bump in power, its the best bang for the buck you will get..

No! go with a tune with the 70mm exhaust or you will be choking your car bad and you will lose a lot of horsepower also you will lose a lot of weight with a new exhaust.
I guess you don't know that a tune by its self will do a lot,,ITS PROVEN by many tuners,, AND members..
Then depending on his money situation,,I DID say an said an exhaust next..LOL..
When my car was bone stock my first mod was a tune and it was night and day...Then the exhaust helped..
At a tune level Only it doesn't have to be a 70 mm exhaust,,it also has to do with the cat cell count of any exhaust used which important ,, Been there done that on dyno tests as others have also..
Its all good..Everyone has advice and info to share on here..
thanks for the info so far guys, i guess i should have been more clear on what he wants to do with the car....he purchased the car with a fabspeed exhaust already installed on the car, and when he purchased said car it had 8k miles on it...... the drone was too much so he switched back to a stock exhaust and had driven it for the last 3k miles stock..... hes used to the car and wants alittle more power, and by no means does he want to heavily mod the car at all, just a few bolt ons, and he doesnt want to spend the money on another exhaust..... i suggested the plenum (we havnt bought one yet, will more then likely buy new if we do) and intake for alittle more turbo/intake noise and alittle more power. im new to p cars but like i said, ive worked on many lower level turbo cars and know that turbo cars like to breath, through the intake and out the exhaust....and because right now the thought of dropping a few grand on exhaust is out the window, i figured atleast opening up the intake side might be a good step for him. my main question was if we do install an intake and plenum will the stock ecu be able to compensate for the increased airflow or will we need to flash tune it? this car will never be a race car, he just likes to take a spirited drive once in a while around some curvy roads and wants alittle more power....

..agreed..
call todd at protomotive and get a mafless tune. call john at speedtech and order his 2.5" quiet exhaust. enjoy the 75+ hp bump and start saving for a sachs 2.5 clutch! easy power and wonderful sound. more than that requires a detailed game plan and a pocket full of cash
