Happened to me a few years ago when I had my 01 996 TT (with about 17k miles - funny). Porsche dealership overfilled mine. I noticed the excessive smoke on the short drive home. I had a pretty good idea what had happened. Made them tow it from house back to the dealership. Took a while to get them to fess up. I made them collect the all the oil drained so I could measure how much they overfilled. Also, made them check DME and other things. Never had any issues with the car afterwards but my concern was shortened lifespan to the cats and o2 sensors. I had just installed a brand exhaust and cats. I was not happy. Anyway, just goes to show you that idiots work in the Porsche shops as well.

Thats what i was worried about even dealers cant fill the oil right lol. Your cats are fine unless you were driving it for 500miles.

Nope. 5 miles to the house in rush hour traffic. I was never really concerned given how quickly I identified. Just a pisser! Same dealer ripped the sidewall out of one of my new rear Mich Pilot Sports while mounting. Car is gone to a new happy owner. Have a GT2 now. Dreading the first oil service or tire change because next nearest dealer is on other side of a very big town :-)

The ones for each turbo hold so little of oil and for some reason never looks as dirty as the rest of the oil,,, actually I know some that don't drain those at changes?

Excellent info. Thanks again. I found a DIY for the regular engine said it's similar for the TT.

I'm a new owner so I'm trying to make sure I don't screw anything up. This isn't like my supra's so it's a new world for me.

I could be wrong but I believe there are 4 areas to drain on TT...case, sump, and each turbo. Others may know better. If you don't drain the turbos, just be conscientious of how much oil you put back in it. In other words, don't pay attention to recommended amount, simply fill right to point where the top bar comes on then stop.

I don't drain the turbos anymore. Its less than a cup of oil on each side, just not enough to worry about on a car with ~9L of oil total. The tank and crank case are enough and refill from there. Add 8L of oil and start the car up to warm check the level once warm. With the change, no turbo drain and 8L it will be on the low side of the level, 1 or 2 bars. Just add half a L and you'll be up near 3/4 on the level indicator. I don't ever fill it full because of threads like this. At least when it's down one bar you know where it is, when you're at max bars it could be 3 L over by accident and the level indicator looks the same. (full)

porsche dealers NEVER drain the turbos. when filling after an engine warm drain of the TWO other plugs, it is conventional wisdom to fill 8 qts, start motor until engine warm and able to register level, then add as needed. usually another qt.

Best practice should therefore be (dealer or indy), pick car up, let warm up, if all bars filled:
-go back back in and ask questions
-hope for the best
-drive slowly

I took a bucket and added a quart of water at a time then made a mark on the side up to 8 qts This way I'll only add the amount of oil that came out then remeasure.
