Overfilled Oil
Overfilled Oil
I took my 2001 996tt to get an oil change last week at a German specialist shop. I drove it two days after the oil change and noticed there was a large amount of smoke at start-up, but did not think too much of it because there is generally a little smoke when I start it sometimes. Today I started it and there was a ton of smoke and a puddle of oil under my car! I proceeded to drive and smoke was bellowing out the back for a while, it was also a bit hesitant on acceleration. I noticed the more I drove it eased up, but when I put my foot down clouds of smoke would come out especially when accelerating around the corner. No CEL or anything. I'm going back to the place first thing tomorrow, but was some expert feedback on whether or not everything should be okay? My car only has 17k miles.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Sounds like the typical "shop forgot to drain ALL the oil out of ALL the drain plug spots" and then filled it up so you're several quarts overfilled now.
If they're a good shop, they'll fix their mistake, hopefully without doing any damage.

Yes a German shop, they specialize in Porsche and there was a TT getting an oil change at the same time as mine. Do you thing everything should be okay? I'm definitely going there first thing tomorrow to talk w/ the manager. All that smoke, the oil on the ground, and the bit of hesitation at first had me a bit scared.

I wonder how that other guys oil change turned out?
Tell me about it and we will prob both be waiting out front tom morning, I will do my best to compose myself when I go there to talk w/ the manager and it was not his fault. I honestly do not know if I want to bring the car to them and will most likely push for the shop to pay the dealership to have it looked over. Luckily this shop is part of a bigger corporation that definitely has insurance.. I drove it about 30 miles since the change and I did not rev past 4.5-5k, it would only bellow out smoke in this range after driving it a few miles after the start-up today. It was definitely a bit bogged down and hesitant for the first few miles.

The worse case scenario is that they just drained it from the motor oil plug, maybe turbos also, and didn't notice hardly any came out AND then filled it with 8 or so qts..
I hope NOT..

I found oil on my garage floor, where did the overflow most likely leak from? If you were in my shoes what would you recommend I request from the manager when I go back to the shop tomorrow? Not too sure if I want to leave it in their hands again. Thanks for the help!
I'd recommend not driving it further. It's a dry sump and the motor case holds very little oil. Too much and you can severely damage things.
Did you check your oil level?
Phone the mgr, explain the problem.

easiest way to fix this is to drain the main tank. (pass side plug on the very bottom of the tank) this will drop 7 qts or so out and you can then get a proper level reading and refill. no way i let them touch it
As one that does all my own maintenance I would too, except if any damage was done due to severely overfilling, I would not want to destroy the evidence. Better to let them flatbed it and see exactly what they did.
I see that side of the argument but proves once again why if possible its best to do your own maintenance. I have really good guys doing work on my home but if I don't continually watch it never turns out as I expect.
I think this is highly unlikely but I did know of a 997TT that had almost 2X the required oil as the service center idiots did not drain the main tank. The 997TT was was the Porsche dealer with the engine out. It required an engine rebuild (20K at the dealer) and the service center (that did the oil change) insurance company footed the bill. Apparently when they turned on the engine to check the level oil shot out of the exhaust. They turned it off quickly but the it was too late. The damage was already done.
I also recommend not to drive the car and call the manager.
