whistling noise

Hi Everyone, I hope some one knows what this sound is , Is about 2-3 months that when I start my car in morning when is cold I heard a high pitch whistling noise that last about 40-50 second and goes away it does not have any effect if you press the clutch, I checked the power steering it was low I added fluid to it but it did not help the noise should I be concern what would you suggest?

As 996tt550hp states it could be from the secondary air injection pump, though whistling is not the way I would describe the noise. More like a vacuum cleaner running at a distance. But with the engine lid open and you standing outside you should be able to note when the air injection pump shuts off and if the whistling stops at the same time...If it does it is not a sound a healthy secondary air injection system makes based on my experience. Suggests a leak somewhere.

Power steering fluid low... Does your car have a manual transmission? If so this lower powering steering fluid could be due to a bad clutch slave cylinder. AFAIK even if it does leak it doesn't cause any noise though. Any fluid stain around the clutch reservoir under the plastic panel ahead of the driver under the front trunk lid? Any leak sign there is a bad clutch slave cylinder, based on my experience.

You can also make arrangements to have the car left overnight at a dealer and have the tech give a listen first thing and offer his opinion. Could be an air leak of the secondary air injection system, and intake air leak, a noisy idler roller bearing, a noisy water pump or something else.

I also have the same sound. Doesn't do it all the time...definitely when it does occur is on startup. There are a few times that while driving during warmup it will fire off. Mine sounds like a high pitch whine though. I am not scheduled to go to my indy for a few more thousand miles...is this something that needs to be fixed asap?

thank you for your well input. You are right about my clutch slave cylinder, my question is, should I replace it even though the clutch is working fine at this time I have own this car for 7 to 8 years and for first time a month ago I check the oil in P.S. reservoir and it was low I added oil and since then I check it few times seems it is at same level and clutch seems ok to me. I will follow your advice and have tech listen noise when engine is cold and give me his opinion. I thought may be there is something that I can do myself I have worked on my car doing spark plug, changing exhaust, all the hoses I replace them with silicone and few other things I have had this car for long enough to practice on it and learn few things I just fix and bleed the rear spoiler and works great. Any way I thank all of input given to me by members.
