Yea, for the 18K you had to give them a good core...

That's why I suggested to find a good used one, too.

And I totally agree with OS, if you rebuild this one, you really should do rods and studs, so you can go big down the road if you choose to...but then you are going to have a lot of money in the motor and at that point you have to start thinking "should I put it toward a 997TT, which require much less to achive more than the 996TT platform?" and it's a newer car, higher value, etc.

After all the analysis, Personally, I would lean toward a used motor from a wreck and take my chances or get it running and trade/sell - I feel a heavy rebuild on a higher milage, older car like this is probably not the best idea...

Define heavy rebuild. This is going to set me back around ~15-16k. How much could i find a used x50 engine for? Since that's not too likely, how about a used regular turbo engine?
The only one i've seen in my brief search was on LA dismantler, but that's a place i've been told to avoid.

I don't know, I have never shopped for one, but I have heard under 10K for used, like 8-9K - try a google search...

You can't put stock rods back in that motor. Why don't you buy 32krazys rebuild kit

There is an x50 motor on there now with 24000 miles for $15500, make offer.

I would buy a used motor as others have suggested = the price of the rebuild will keep growing.

X50/gt2/turbo is the exact same engine. Turbo's and tune are the only thing different.

The heads spent a good long time at the machine shop. apparently they had some 996 heads that were ahead of me.
They should be back in the next couple days, then the shop is going to start putting everything back together.

I got the car back a couple weeks ago, right before going on vacation. The rebuild seems to have gone well, the car feels strong and it eliminated some of that notorious startup rattling noise.

Great to hear you finally got the car back with a fresh build. Hopefully it didn't end up costing way more than the shops were estimating. Did you end up having any upgraded or aftermarket parts installed during the rebuild?

Their estimate was pretty accurate. It was more in the end because i had some other stuff done, like the water pump, secondary air pump, coolant hose welding, couple other things.
I didn't use any upgraded parts, i'm not planning on putting more boost through it or anything. One rebuild is enough for me.
