996TT to 930, would you?

I currently have a 65,000 mile 996 TT that has been a lot of fun over the last couple of years. But, just the other day I was following a guards red 930, and I couldn't take my eyes off her.

I found a 1986 red 930 in IL (I'm in CO) with 67,000 on the clock. Pictures online look good, interior looks clean, carfax is clean. I guess my question is, would you? I figure my car is worth just south of $40k, and I am thinking of offering $50k.

My biggest concern is that I'm giving up a lot of modern driveability and reliability. With this many miles, what can I expect to start failing? I would assume anywhere from $2k-$4k in annual maintenance, which isn't far off from my 996.

Carfax shows history going back to 2001 in NM, but then sold to WI, where I assume it was only driven in the summer (I grew up in WI/MI, so I couldn't imagine driving that car in the winter!).

Any comments or advice is greatly appreciated. Cross posted from 930 forum.

Completely different. Before you plunge, take a hike over to the Pelican Parts Porsche forums; specifically the 930 sub-forum. There is a collection of experts there, and if you browse through the threads long enough you will see that there are literally dozens of chronic issues that can plague 930's. If you like getting elbow-deep into working electrical, CIS fuel injection, turbo and suspension issues, then a 930 will be an awesome hobby. From what little I know [and I know some 930 owners] they are awesome weekend chargers, but not the most reliable daily drivers.

That said...if I could find a 930 in the $40K range, I'd nab it. Just the visceral nature of them is the appeal. To me it would be worth spending as much time underneath it as in it.....but that is just one opinion. As always, PPI is mandatory for these.

Yep, I've owned both, and they were both modded. Definitely a trip back in time. Would love to have a 930 back in the stable and a cool ride once in a awhile, but I wouldn't give up my 996tt for one (if I still had one). Convert your car to FULL RWD and you'll have the same affect with all the amenities...but less turbo lag.

..concur. a rwd 96t is much the "better" ride if you want to raise hair. 993 turbo is no slouch either. 930 doesn't have enough newer tech for my taste, and is even more raw without them. but to each their own.

to the op, if you can't have both, i'd rwd convert the one youve got and re-think lol. a modded 96turbo running rwd is to be reckoned with, for sure. while the awd in concert with abs/psm is WAY too intrusive and all the assist stuff makes the car feel as *cumbersome* as it can be. not so, once eliminated

...AND..a modded 930 is about as fast as a stock 996 turbo..unless you have a K29 turbo or bigger...it only FEELS faster because of the lag...you would have to spend a ton of loot to make the 930 as fast as a flashed 996turbo, if you were so inclined. My 930 turbo had a K29, Andial IC, Andial fuel enrichment, European fuel system and B&B triflow exhaust..and ONLY made 470rwhp AND had toggle switch power delivery. Pretty fast for that car, but no match for a flashed 996 with some bolt-ons...again, if you were so inclined....

I would (and have) seriously considered moving to a 930 from my 996TT. They are just legendary... Not to mention, I think they are only going to go up in price from here. 996 Turbo, probably not so much... I would like to own a 930 one day, hopefully they don't get too far out of reach before I can get my hands on one.

I think everyone is in the "ooo I want a 930 now" mood... I started looking for a nice 930 last spring, Nice driver cars were $40-$45k Now garbage is $45 nice drivers are $55-60 really nice cars are bringing ridiculous money.

Best of luck on your search, I sorta gave up... There are nice cars out there if you are patient.

I am in the same position I should have made a move about three years ago, before 930-Mania started again.

I have a '91 965 Turbo (owned it since 2003 ) and recently sold the 997 TT that I had owned for a little over 2 years.

997 TT was a blast to drive but it never gave me the grin that I get every time I drive the 965 Turbo.

I would buy another aircooled Porsche all day long but where I live (KY) there's no body around me that's knowledgeable enough to work on these cars.

If you have a mechanic or if you know how to work on them then by all means go for one and I know you won't have any regrets.

Just remember, air cooled Porsches are maintenence freaks... so make sure you have some funds to keep the car going

I would definitely do a NA air cooled 911. But not turbo. Parts are spendy and relatively rare. And the rebuild intervals are fairly short. And when coupled with the price of air cooled turbo parts it is quite spendy to run. But, can't argue with the rawness, cool factor and collectibility. I would personally love a 964RS.

i struggle with this but it's a tweaked 993 coupe i want. the 93t is out of range whereas the 997t is not. i just have put off trading into a 997t becuase of all the stuff i'd need to do to have it measure up performance wise, relative to my current 96t.

the tweaked n/a 993 coupe would be perfect for me in canyons since my old one ( why do i MISS that car!? arghh..) was always in the gear/range i needed.. not that my pikes peak ready 96tt isn't already lol. this 96t with mods and rwd keeps up *safely* with superbikes on canyon twistys,.. and that is no small feat. there are not a lot of cars that can replicate that kind of power and stability. i don't honestly believe the 930t is one of them. anyone ever having had the rear of the car suddenly be in front, or even just sideways, knows what i'm talkin' bout

I had a modified 930 about ten years ago. They are a lot of fun but I personally wouldn't daily it. I had BB headers, exhaust, SC cams, bigger turbo, Koklen ic and several other things. It probably made a little over 400 rwhp. I thought the turbo lag was horrific and I consider myself pretty hardcore as I'll tolerate a lot. It was a dog off boost imho. The power band was binary which made it a lot of fun and probably made if feel faster than it was. It still is one of my favorite cars to look at. I noticed you live in CO. The heater worked very well. However the ac was more or less cosmetic. So bottom line, they're beautiful but performance wise even with cams and all the bolt ons aren't equal to our modern 996tt with a flash and exhaust. It'd be a great weekend car.
