what oil and fuel do you use??
Hi all,
As the new kid on the block, I sure have learned oodles of info on this site. My question today is which oil to use and the proper viscosity. I was planning on using Mobil One but got a little confused with the viscosities. Also the manuel is recommending premium fuel with 93 octane rating. I use the car as a daily driver mostly and was wondering what everyone else is using. I just filled up with Exxon premium 91. Should I use octane booster or just let it be. Thanks for all the help. I love this car!!!

From the oil junky: Mobil-1, Redline...
Hi. I have studies, chemical analyses, and tests of various oils.
According to the results I've seen, the top oils are all synthetics,
and the best of those are Mobil-1, Redline, Motul, and Amsoil.
Good oil is important, but so is maintenance. Motor oil is like
underwear. It is certainly cool to have the fanciest brand, but
it's better to wear KMart briefs and change every day, rather
than to have Gucci boxers but only change them once a
week...
Getting the exact viscosity recommended by Porsche is a
pain, but various dealers do sell it. Do run the thinnest viscosity
recommended for the vehicle for your circumstances. It flows
quickest at startup to lube any parts that drip-dried while the
motor was off.
Never get suckered in by anyone selling oil additives. The
oil companies aren't stupid or lazy. They are at the top of the
game of finding ways to make lubrication more efficient, and they
all have additive packages in their products.
As to gas, you can be sure Porsche designed the car for the
American market, and will run fine with the Super you can get
from any gas station. You *might* get a trace amount of
difference from an octane booster, but I would bet $500 that
in a double-blind test, no one with a stock 996tt would be able
to detect whether the car was running standard super or
boosted gas, from seat-of-the-pants feel. Driving the 996tt is
like bringing a shotgun to a knife fight anyway. You're way ahead
of the game. Anything that adds or removes one pellet from a
shell isn't going to make any real difference.

I use Mobil 1 Ow-40, Chevron Super 91 Octane

to answer the question, I use the Mobil-1 in the viscosity
recommended by Porsche, and I change it every 3 or 4 thousand
miles. I do use Redline 'WaterWetter' in the coolant.

Oil: Mobil 1 0W-40 (I might change to 15W-50 as I did on my 01 TT if I get bigger turbos although I heard it is not good to go so heavy!!)
Gas: Shell 93 (mainly) SUnoco 94 and Sunoco Racing 100 occasionally...
