How does the Gallardo compare to the GT2?

Hey guys,

I am considering adding a 2004 Gallardo to my collection to keep the GT2 company. The only thing I know about the Gallardo is that it has a 500 horse V10, AWD and very exotic looks. I have never driven one and wonder if the car is worth looking into.

1. Which one is faster stock? However, I know the GT2 will be much easier to mod due to being turbocharged.

2. Which handles better? I would assume the Gallardo being AWD would be more dull.

3. Which is more engaging and challeging to drive?

4. Brakes?

5. Are Gallardo's reliable?

6. Does the Gallardo cost a lot more to service than the GT2?

7. What does the Gallardo do better than the GT2 other than attracting a lot more attention?

Thanks in advance guys.

George

1. GT2 is probably faster
2. Gallardo probably handles more predictably than the GT2 does (mid engine and AWD).
3. More challenging? GT2 for sure.
4. Never heard of any complaints ...
5. Same here. Some cat issues, but nothing major.
6. Wouldn't think so, it's an Audi
7. Sound. Slap some Tubis or KreisSieg on the Gallardo, and it'll sound just perfect. E-Gear, if that's your style.

The Gallardo does have very tall gear ratios. They shortened 'em for 2006. Makes it a bit less fun to drive, I guess.

Bottom line IMHO is the GT2 is a track car that can be used and enjoyed on the road, and the Gallardo is more of a GT, the kind of car you'd drive across the desert at 180mph non-stop ...

I would take the Gallardo, over the now dated 996 GT2. The GT2 can be modifyed to be very fast, but a naturally aspired AWD 10 cyclinder Italian symphony is just hard to not wany.

Does the Gallardo make the GT2 obsolete? If I get the Gallardo will I not want to drive my GT2 anymore? The Gallardo definitely looks a lot hotter.

Has anyone driven the GT2 and Gallardo back to back?

i have driven both. we have a 996 gt2 and we were shopping for a lambo to add to the garage. Drove an e-gear gallardo, a 6 speed murci, and an e-gear murcie.

First off, let me say the e-gear is the way to go on a lambo, even though the 6speed is 100X better than the ferrari. On top of that, the murcie is much nicer than the gallardo. Finally, both the murcie and the gallardo can be called italian-styled cars with german reliability/performance.

Unlike previous model lambos, I consider the gallardo and the murcie to be much more driveable and reliable. Unfortunately, the services are still ridiculous like ferrari and you relly have to search for a reputable shop to do the work. you live in cali, so it shouldnt be too difficult.

Although we decided to buy an e-gear murcie, we couldnt justify selling the gt2 for it. For the price difference, it just isnt that much better... SUre it is much more bling factor and it probably does pull harder on straight, high-speed stretches when compared to the gt2, but it isnt worth the 100K+ plus the gt2.

I know you are considering the gallardo and not the murcie, but i couldnt really justify getting the gallardo either. FOr taht kind of money, id much rather have the gt2 plus 50K cash, not attract as much attention, and save a ****load of money on maintenance.

I dont know your build, but I couldnt really get comfy in the seat of the gallardo because im too tall (even with the seat all the way back). I love the cockpit and the steering wheel more than almost any other car. I also love the 4wd system and the fact that it has 500hp in that tiny *** car. The 4wd does make it a little less interesting to drive compared to the gt2, but its much safer and you really dont have to worry about getting caught in ****ty weather all the time. I hate the fact that the door open like a non-lambo...

So i guess what im trying to say I have decided that i wouldnt trade in the gt2 + cash for either car. I think its better to save up and have both even though its irresponsible money management (i like to be low key though). That being said, the gt2 is a better car for me, but everyone is different. IF i did splurge for the lambo though, id definitely get pearl white, pearl orange, or black.

hope i helped you out.

Tiff would say GT2 and correct me if Im wrong but I think Matt N went through 3 gallardos before going CGT. I think there was some reliablitiy issues.

I would go with GT2 because I would drive the hell out of it and not want to worry about it falling appart or having to spend a rediculous amount on maint.

I also have a hard time understanding why someone would want an exotic thats AWD??? Kinda defeats the purpose imo.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses. The more I think about it, the chances of me owning both the Gallardo and GT2 are not likely. So, if I get the Gallardo, it would replace the GT2 which I have not had very long.

I love the GT2, but when I see pictures of the Gallardo it makes me go crazy. That car looks so hot compared to my Porsche. I heard some sound clips of the Gallardo with a Tubi exhaust and test pipes and it sounded amazing. It was like an F1 car. I know my GT2 can never have that exotic sound.

However, I love the rawness and intimidating character of the GT2. The GT2 is very intense in my opinion. I have driven stock 996TT's and they seem much too mild in comparison. Is the Gallardo's character more like the TT, GT2 or neither?

The biggest thing I don't like about the Gallardo is the AWD drivetrain, which makes me think the handling would be dull. Can this be true? It is a Lambo afterall.

Also, the cost of maintenance and repairs concern me quite a bit. Would you expect it to be equal to a 360? Higher or lower? How about resale value (both used)?

Does the GT2's more intense driving experience, RWD, power and bulletproof reliability outweigh the Gallardo's stunning exotic looks and amazing sound?

Has anyone here sold their GT2 for a Gallardo?

By the way, I would be looking to purchase a used Gallardo, not new.

Thanks again.

Interesting comment. After more years than I care to count driving manual gearboxes, including Porsche, BMW, and Lambo, the Ferrari manual is the best I have driven.

I don't have any GT2 experience, but the Gallardo is far less "involving" to drive than a 360. The tall gears, higher weight, and 4wd all conspire to take the edge off the feedback quality.

You can plan on total service costs for a 360 to be about $1200 until the 15k service is due, which I believe runs about $3500, but I've never done one. I think the Gallardo may have a small advantage here. The Gallardo depreciates MUCH faster than the 360 (I owned mine 18 mos and 7k miles and sold it for $2500 more than what I paid for it). Buying the Gallardo used will mitigate that factor somewhat, but it will still depreciate faster than the 360.

In the end, it sounds like the Gallardo is producing an itch you won't be happy about until you scratch!
