Tune!!
Hello
i've been asking my self this question all the time
Since most of tuners doing the same job
What the difference between them?
If you tuned your car few years ago do you need a retune?
Or tuning methods still same.
Let's hope i explained what in my mind since my English is not good

good question and one i also ask myself all the time. my cargraphic tune is 10 yrs old yet my car runs like hell. so what can be gained from a "new" tune... when nothing is "wrong". that is the question.
From what I've heard, tuners will typically play with different maps. Those that don't know Porsche's all that well will typically modify 5-10 maps to get claimed HP/TQ gains. Those that specialize in tunes for Porsches often change 60-70 maps with similar "gains" from a numbers perspective. I can only imagine that fine tuning more maps just makes the tune work that much better with the engine (smoother, better power delivery, etc.). I'm curious if others have heard the same...
New to the Porsche but not new to working with tuners......when your are heavily modded choosing a good tuner will be worth every penny for max power and must important drivability. If you are lightly modded..some bolt on a can tune can produce a decent power gain but if you go with a good tuner then you will be able to get the most power from your mods as they will tweak your tune based on your logs. This is very general statement from my experience with Chevys, mopars and fords tuners
Get a tuner you trust....I have seen one tuner in order to get the most power would allow the knock sensor to protect the engine. Another tuner would try to avoid knock and give you a safer tune.
For wot power...a/f and ignition are really the two items you will adjust..so there really isn't any trick one tuner has over another.

All I can say is I had about an 8 year old tune on my car (my guess is that it may have been a canned tune). All I did was change it to a newer custom tune (meaning run logs send back and make adjustments)
It transformed the car.

A good tune does not go bad or stop working just because of its age. A good tune is one that works with the components you have on the engine of your car.
What many of the good tuners have done, in the last 5 years, is become better aware of what certain components need and how they work with other components. An good example of that is certain injectors behave very differently compared to other brands at different RPM's and loads and pressures; thus a car with a specific brand of injector on it will need a drastically different tune then a car with brand B injectors ----> "the Good tuners" have figured many variables like that out and have gone to great lengths to make there tunes more drivable and smooth throughout the rpm range all while making good power gains.

Most of the companies who are active on this board have revised their tunes within the last 5 years. We have had a few independent dyno's versus tunes that came out around the 996's inception, and my advice would be that it is definitely worth it to update to something newer (we're talking about as much as 50 horsepower). Besides the power, there have also been great improvements in drivability through hardware changes such as the Hitachi mass air flow sensor upgrade.
I have a several tunes /tuners in the past,,
And all I can say is that each tuner has there own way of dialing in a tune,,
There are NUMEROUS threads on this type of topic and there are users of tunes that will stand behind there choice of tuner.
Believe me its an expensive thing to compare tunes and then to tell others the results is a whole another issue do to customer loyalty.. LOL..

Getting car tuned that is stock or having exhaust and filter is a lot easier. Because maps are allready created. They load up the map. Do few pulls to make sure everything looks fine adjust it. Done. I dont have agressive tune just to get extra hp. Car is faster and eats less gas. Believe it or not with normal driving with few pulls i can get 300 miles plus on full tank of gas. Before it was. 200 220. Im happy. 2nd gear and 3rd gear is crazy and pulls hard all the way up top. As everyone will mention. Get boost leak test before any tune.
Agreed with the leak test comment - this should not be considered as an optional step. I just did this test on mine this past weekend and found significant leaks. I was able to address some of them by tightening a few clamps. However, I still have a leak somewhere and likely need to replace the diverter valves (should hold 20 psi for 30 seconds). I got a leak tester set from Markski @ 911tuning - they work great and the test is dead simple. The ease of fixing the leaks, however, will vary.
pressure test regularly... its a must...
I've seen tunes with only 3 maps changed... rpm, Vmax, and airmass map for break away boost...
big no go...

Modern tunes are able to be developed with faster, more intricate computers, and more parameters can be tested and modified. This doesn't make old tunes obsolete, but they may not always be complete, or at their best potential.
