I am considering purchasing a used 01 TT, and before i make the jump, wants to know what kind of common trouble areas with the 01, what i should watch out for, etc?

same here.......mine remains problem free as well, knock on wood...

they seem to need fresh spark plugs at about 20k. esp is they have the original colder plugs that were bumped up a range in late 01 / 02+ models. otherwise there are no specific common problems.

I have had no real problems with my '01 and currently have 32k on the clock. As stated earlier, the plugs need to be changed to a warmer plug.

According to the above thread, early TT's are known to have transmission problems ?
Any others?

I've only had mine a year. Problems...well...Sometimes I go so fast I smile and laugh at the same time, slower drivers may think I'm drunk. Also, the rear tires are worn and need to be replaced. :-) But really, I think I'm going to change plugs and oil in spring and keep on rollin'. I'm also going to do the MAF cleaning mentioned, just as a regular practice to avoid trouble.

I drove one for about 30k miles and only had spoiler not going up and down issue which resulted in replacement of the instrument cluster under warranty. I honestly cannot remember anything else screwing up on my 01. Out of my 03 and 04 TTs, I have only had a lose windshield wiper and a interior light switch to go out. I think my 3 996TTs combined have been more bullet proof than any other cars I have owned.

i only have one problem with the 01' :

1st time i drove it it was fast, so i did a stage 2 upgrade on it and it was faster, then i was not contented i switched tuners and it was much more faster,550 hp, then after a while i needed more hp so i am now doing a 650 hp!!
problem with it is that u won't be able to stop modding the hell out of it and it gets expensive!!

22k over 4 years, no problems. Just replace the plugs at 20k miles as said above.

what do you need a glove box for? there's a little thing under the steering wheel to hold your manual. then put your registration and a hundred bucks in the center console.

gotta have some cash to bribe the fuzz dude.

I've found that there are some ways to offset the cost of the car. If you go for a ride with me and swear, it's $5. If the word 'Holy' comes before the swear word, it's $10. Any money that falls out of your pockets during the ride becomes my property.

:-)
