High Boost/Bigger Tubo - Higher Viscosity? What oil?
one less scientific way to help determine whether or not the oil is working is to drive the car and in *some* ways oil is oil. without opening up the never ending debate, i figure as long as changes are frequent, ( i probably change it 2x a year ) and viscosity/oil "types" are similar? i can't see a problem. plus, i've seen porsches approved oil list for 96turbo. there are like 100 oils specified as "ok" to use.
i also have a difficult time believing that just because mobil 1 paid for that decklid sticker? that is the end all be all of oils. i'm sure it's good and if the gt2rs uses m1? who am i to argue. but my bastardized mix of edge ( admittedly experimental lol ) seems to be holding up just fine. even my previous 0/40 - 5/40 M1 fills allowed that oil starved condition of which i spoke upthread. but that has yet to happen once now with the edge 5/40 & 5/50 fill.
just saying.

I agree that any quality synthetic oil in the right weight would work for 95 of Porsche owners, the other 5% that races or live in extreme hot climates might want to be more choosey. I use Mobile 0-40 but next change will probably try their 5-50 or Rot T6.
0W40 is fine for the vast majority of people IMHO. Obviously it's going to depend on where you live (climate), the kind of driving you do (mostly freeway, mostly stop & go, tracking, etc). I would say the vast majority of people don't really need more viscosity, especially synthetic oil. You're suppose to be using only synthetic oil with Turbo Porsche cars.
I'm running the Castrol Syntec 5/40 now in place of the Mobile 1 0/40. I find the car is quieter at start up on hot days. At best the engines in these cars sound like there's a bag of marbles in the crank case, the 5/40 helps with this sound to be sure...
Todd at Protomotive advised me to use the VR1. That is what I use.
i've been under the impression that all modern synthetic oils ( at least those approved by porsche ) have zinc? isn't that the crux of the oil debate. the ppm's of zinc, one brand to the next?
I used to run Motul 20w60; this oil IMHO is was/is formulated for racing and not with any other purpose like fuel economy, emissions, low temp viscosity etc. However, the IMS rattle never improved with any other oil but T6. RT6 shut the rattle off. Many here found that to be true. Based on that fact, it must follow that it is not viscosity, but formulation that quiets the noise hence film strength must be superior. FWIW..
