Anyone have extended warranty?

I'm about to take delivery on a 2001 Porsche 996 Turbo. It is stock and I was thinking of getting an extended warranty. Can anyone recommend a good extended warranty and how much I expect to pay? The car has 50k miles

Also, my local credit union offered me Route 66 Extended Warranty. Any porsche owners have experience with them? I've heard some BMW folks that had good experience..

Thanks!

Depends, if you can fix stuff yourself, you dont need one, most of the extended warranties dont cover moving parts.... few years back i bought M3 - it was a huge waste of money, over 2k.

a good warranty cost you over 2k to 3k - make sure you read everything before you decide/ or sign anything. and see what it covers.

Do you plan on keeping it stock? I can tell you right now the transmission will be your biggest headache with the friggin' 2nd gear popup issue that is so common among the 996 models.

See what they cover for the transmission.

I have actually purchased two extended warranties in the six and a half years of owning my car. I got them based on recommendations by the Porsche dealer I bought the car from. The first was from Fidelity Warranty Services for 4 years / 48000 miles, for $7063. I probably got gouged on the cost, as I didn't do proper research ahead of the car purchase. Once that warranty expired, I bought one from National for 3 years / 36000 miles, for $5012. So in all I paid $12,075 for seven years and almost 85,000 miles of extended coverage.

I know that's a lot to pay, but it has actually saved me money to date. I estimate that I would have had to pay around $23K for repairs had I not had the warranty. Some of the warranty work was MAF replacement, convertible top motor replacement, driver's door window microswitch, primary and secondary radiator fan replacement, alternator replacement, power steering reservoir replacement, spoiler hydraulic lift assembly, console display replacement, and a number of other issues that I can't recall off the top of my head. So I would say that I saved around $11K by having the warranties.

And I feel that both companies are good, though Fidelity probably edges out National by a small margin in quality of service. After all, National wouldn't cover my broken cup holder...

The moral of the 911 Turbo story is that if you want to play you gotta pay... But be sure to have a warranty to minimize your cost.

You definitely have to shop around for prices,, my same warranty was 3500 for extra 4yrs,,and at another Porsche Dealer it was 6000 for the same one,, Fidelity..

Yeah, I've definitely learned that... My eyes have been opened regarding the dealership. Like a number of others on this forum, I experienced the dreaded coolant hose failure and the dealership quoted me $7,500 for the fix. I discovered they actually farm the work out to a local indy shop instead of doing it themselves. So I went to the indy shop and they quoted me $5,600 for the job. Needless to say I didn't have the dealer do the work...

I will probably buy my next Porsche out of area (maybe even out of state) since the dealership here isn't typically flexible on price.

When I bought my car I shopped around and found the best deal through a Porsche dealer, which was about $5K for 3 yr/36K warranty. That $5K was negotiable, but they quoted that since I didn't buy the car from them.

In the end I didn't get a warranty. In a little over 2 years and 13,000 miles later I would have used up the warranty in repairs. So long as I can make it another 7 months without any issues the warranty costs will be roughly the same as not having it. Your results may vary.

Be sure to negotiate the price. You should be able to get 10-15% off their original quote.
