any fuel leak? fuel pump faulty? What does the fuel gauge read?

I'd tow it to a shop. keep a fire extinguisher on the car also just in case.

2 possible problems..

These cars have a fuel pump failure issue or a faulty sender...

my car just had the same thing the tank read 1/4 but the car was out of gas..ended up being the sender

Put some fuel in and see what happens

The hose sometimes falls off the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. The fuel smell might be the rich starting mixture.

Yikes. Can't wait to hear what it is. Did you drive a 997S while you were at the dealer? :-)
