Boost level

It was real cold this morning on my way to work. I usually have the same driving pattern every morning. What was curious was my boost came on quicker when I normally have no boost. I hit .3 bar when I normally have no boost and a couple of times .5 bar when I usually have .1 bar. Is it because of the cold weather or is something else going on here. I know the cold provides more power but not boost quicker. I do not remember this happening with my 87 930.

I don't know, having the same thing with me... Seems like I am seeing higher boost numbers under normal conditions... This morning on my way to school I hit 1.1bar, which would make the 3rd time ever....the other 2 times were a "spike" to 1.1, but this morning was 65F (coldest day yet) and car was running like a bull

I think there's more ignition advance with cold air which makes the boost build up at lower RPM. The denser air and richer mixture helps too.

No real surprise. Cooler air charge means there is more oxygen in the same volume of air. If your car was running a little rich prior. it would be running a little leaner with the added oxygen. That is to say you would be making more power. I have found that once you get below about 58 degrees, the difference is not really any more noticable.

You can now understand why at certain ambient temperatures liquid CO2 cooling really helps.

Ditto - cooler air = more efficient engine and thus more HP - fundamental thermodynamics

Boost

I realize colder air makes more power but does that mean that the turbos spool up quicker which effects how quick the boost comes on or does the turbos spool up the same but the air is denser causing the charge to be more O2 rich. I guess what I am trying to find out is why does the boost gauge come on quicker is it because of the denisty of the air or that the turbos spool up quicker

It's probably a combination of advanced timing, denser air, and less over rich mixtures.
You get 1% power increase for every 7 deg. F. air temp. reduction entering the cylinders. This gain is from the increased air density only. You may get additional gains or losses as the compter adjusts boost, mixture, and timing to compensate for the cold air AND increased output. The computer may even throttle back some of the cold air gains. You have to make sure no airbox mods allow warm underhood air to enter the engine.

Last time I stepped on it when kevin was here I stepped on it and a built 69 camaro and hit 1.5bar.... But that was before. Now... Our new setup doesn't use turbos and only needs lot's and lot's of NOS.
