996 turbo rwd conversion
996 turbo rwd conversion
Hi guys,
Looking to do RWD conversion on my 996. I know their are tons of threads on how to complete this conversion, but I have a few other questions and would like some input from people who have the conversion. I am not a road racer so I am not concerned about turn in. I am sure one wheel spin is very heavy from a launch/heavy footed roll so I am curious as to how many of you took the gt2 conversion to the next level and added an LSD. Do any of you have any recommendations on LSD's? Is it necessary to add a transaxle pump/cooler with no factory heat exchanger? Any recommendations as far as what route to take on this would be appreciated.

i "half" did the rwd conversion meaning i have not stubbed the axles/removed the front diff etc, i simply removed the cardan shaft, BUT running open diff, as my car is a dedicated canyon carver and is only driven as such ( think pikes peak hillclimbing etc ) and running open diff is absolutely ridiculous. not worth even doing, unless one is driving exclusively in straightlines. that of course is just my take, others will differ. i do not launch, i just drive aggressively in up/downhill on blacktop. i opted for a wavetrac torque biasing differential as i believed it would suit my needs and for the 1200$ it has exceeded my expectations and the car is a sure footed as any can be. i run psm off and am about 525/550 rwhp with 12" rears.
its freakin amazing, and folks don't know what they are missing going rwd with psm off. or perhaps they do. i didn't finish the conversion for a couple of reasons, but so far have not suffered in any way, since i did have the presence of mind to realize very quickly i needed an LSD of SOME kind, and saw no reason to go with a 40/60 guard or a giken etc, for reasons of cost, as well as the fact the plate type lsd's can/will need to rebuilt at sometime or another. whether on your watch or the next owner possibly. the wavetrac is phenomenal on this car rwd and cheap/solid and very sturdy indeed.
it is worth noting that even top of the line g'box builders such as guard make available wavetracs or some similarly constructed TBD lsd's of their own. i find that very telling.

just has to be re-shimmed and/at the flange and pinion gear lash? but i'm a bit out of my depth on the instal particulars and am probably "misspeaking" on the parts that need to be adjusted but the flange is where it is altered iirc?, but it just needs to be shimmed essentially. i personally never considered running awd, especially once i had it back with the half assed conversion i did wavetrac and psm off. psm "on", and running rwd is so intrusive as to be hazardous in my estimation and i know that some will say it's never fully "off" unless the unit is disconnected, but it's "off" enough for me lol
personally? i would contact sam in here at by design, but i'm sure wavetrac sells its own stuff.

you will need at least one new bearing. it will get wrecked removing it from the old diff. simple backlash adjustment. mine cost 250$ for the install but my trans was out at the time. you can do it in the car but its a tight fit.
contact unitrax in cali for purchase autotech builds them
no reason not to run it with awe if thats your pleasure. its a different unit. pull out the old diff and install the new wavetrac with ring gear

I did the whole enchilada. Full track set up. GT3Cup uprights, LCAs, monoball everything, full PSM delete, gearbox cooler, Guard billet LSD, blah blah. Works well last a long time. For the street budget set up, rip out the front diff/axles, pull the plug on the PSM, throw in a wavetrac and call it a day.

With the power you are making isn't a wavetrac more importantly a torque biasing diff not recommended? Why I ask is that I was interested in it and I have same turbos as you but was told that LSD is the way to go.
You can simply unplug the PSM pump. It's located under the brake master cylinder. You can also remove the pump and swap in the GT2 reservoir and lines for a full delete..
If theirs no added benefit to the full delete I think ill just pull the plug. Quicker if I need to reverse it later on.
ditching the whole unit saves you 70 lbs over just the shaft. and the added load on the front axles are still turning
