2nd Gear pop-out on a fresh rebuild!
So as the title says my 2nd gear popped-out yesterday while under load around 18 mph my car was cold I only made it a block down the street when it popped-out. I just had my transmission rebuilt 3000 miles ago for this very issue since my clutch needed replacing so I was pretty pissed when it happened yesterday. I called my transmission builder and he thinks it's a cable issue or a stretched cable he thinks this because the 2nd gear normally doesn't pop out of gear under load according to him? Now I did install a new 997SSK in November around 1000 miles ago and everything went extremely well marked cables just like they were on the oem stock shifter. So if I do have a bad cable or stretched cable how does one check for the tolerances or measure the play correctly? Then to top everything else my car developed some kind of oil leak I think its the RMS but I just had it replaced for preventive measures when the engine was out. What are the chances of having a bad RMS installed? or Maybe a bad oil breather hose on top of the engine somewhere
It looks like it coming from top of back of the engine where the transmission butts up dripping down both sides and trails to the back of the engine?

Was 6 years ago, so can't remember, but the chance its the RMS? If they replaced that while reinstalling the g'box is highly unlikely, though I suppose anything is possible. Its just a large o ring essentially.
Lastly as much as I hate to bring it up, but I followed your sharing the info when you had all the work done and I thought the prices you paid bordered on buggery and said as much here.
Something is fishy in Denmark and I'm sorry but you need to be compensated and if it popped out of 2nd its because the idiots repaired the synchros /1st/2nd or whatever they did, to.original factory spec as they presumably were unaware of the re-shimming to change the placement of fourth gear in the stack to allow for a tighter tolerance.
It needs to be removed and re-done on their time and dime.
They are a dubious workshop, I am sorry to say.
Although Porsches largest Los Angeles' area dealership also had to "ask Porsche" what to "do", when the same recurring 2nd gear pop out occurred shortly after my warrantied repair took.place. sucks but it happens..
Take it back, explain the reshimmimg necessary and pay them nothing more!

This is a freaking Greek tragedy. First of all what he said about "no.load", and 2nd gear pop is absurd and incorrect.

im genuinely sorry for your issues and travails. i have been there. also, you are near to roger at ca motorsports. there cant be a better trans guy local to you.
you NEED them to step up and mention the re-shimming. they may look at you sideways but the more info you have walking ( back ) in? the stronger and less negotiable your position will be...and you should not budge. as i noted, they fkd up, but it can happen to a shop not knowing of the porsche changes which were at least on some level "official", perhaps even a tsb or bulletin. thats the only way "we" knew there would be a lasting repair.
i had both the "leak" you mention in addition to the 2nd gear pop continuing. if you needed any more specifics, i would try to share with you pm. good luck man, this is painful for you, i am sure, as it was for me.

A Z
Gbox?
This "counting of the threads" during shifter install baffles me and I don't know how this got propagated. Each shifter will be slightly different especially since there is a little slop during the shifter bolt in. You need to bolt in the shifter, install the centering tool on the new shifter, and then clip in the shifter cables. The likely hood that it will be in the exact same spot as the old shifter is a 50/50 shot at best.
Yeah i completely frustrated at this point the Porsche mechanic that R&R my engine and transmission is not the same who rebuilt it. I live in Phoenix and had the transmission shipped to CO who only specializes in Porsche transmission rebuilds. So either way I would still have to pay my mechanic to R&R for about $800 and then I would just drive the transmission my self to CO in my truck and wait till its done right instead of shipping like last time. And the leak is driving me nuts I have a car lift so I am constantly looking for where its coming from but no luck yet.

No It wasn't gbox but it's actually the old manger that worked at gbox he opened his own shop a few years ago.

And yes he knows about the shimming we talked about a bunch before I decided to let him rebuild it he worked at gbox for a long time.
man, this is lousy. only guy i ever spoke to there was eric. he was helpful and knew his stuff ( as i did not ) and damn... this is crazy you aren't even in the same city as the shop... argh. but of course, they would have to know!
Sorry to hear that. I dealt with Gbox a few years ago and the only thing they could do was bad mouth everyone else in the industry. Stan (owner) actually tried to convince me a Guard diff would destroy my gearbox. He told me the stock open diff would outperform the Guard unit. Not kidding!! A great way to try to sell me their Gikken diff. Really a bunch of clowns. Eric was the other guy at the shop there. He was an ok guy. Sorry for your troubles. Hope you get it sorted.
Yes it's Eric shop he knows his stuff & always willing to answer all my questions thoroughly I am positive he will take care of me if it is really is a gear issue. I really wanted to see if anyone on here has experienced lose shifter cables causing their gears to not fully engage in gear and if it was remedied by either new cables or if there is a DIY procedure to tighten my cables? I am trying to rule out everything before I drop the engine again as this is getting costly.

Appreciate this comment! (Owner) Clowns, love it! I don't own one but, was always curious to the accuracy.
well, good luck man. that guy eric has to have rebuilt 1000 96/g50 boxes by now. i hope it's just a cable?! but i never had any issue with a 997ssk and while I've heard of imprecise engagement? but never an actual 2nd gear pop from a misaligned shifter cable
again, good luck to you. frustrating indeed.
