This one has been good for ~2years of HARD driving...although am considering going to EPL's VAG sensor depending on price and if Tony(EPL) sees a real benefit for me...(Edit, GT2/K24 @ ~1.2bar)
There's a couple other aftermarket brands, but why buy lesser/unknown parts...
What MAF is this? And when did he start using it? I have a k24/18G tune by epl and recently changed my maf to a standard Bosch unit.

hey rob, i just re=read that thread as i commented to epl tony as i was surprised that he didn't at least on some level support/sell or advise anyone to run mafless..then all this about fender well intakes!? well, i've been in enough hitachi maf cars..only listened to one with a proto mafless ( so that didn't help ) but i gotta say.. if one is driving a nice mid level power tt ( oh lets say 500/600 rwhp ) then i just dont see the point of messing with any of that stuff, as the gains are if not negligible? hardly seem to me, to be worth it.

..and then there is the dreaded visual portion of our CA semi annual looky up our tailpipe by the "state"..

umm, no thanks brother. have at it my new bosch has been doin what it do now for 3+ years with nary a cel.. and i'll NEVER clean it LOL

reason I'm am thinking of looking at a upgraded MAF is, it appears from my datalogs I have reviewed that I max my MAF out from 5000RPM+ at WOT, and setup for roadcourse use(ie. lots of high RPM vs a street blaster)...and since Tony/EPL is already my tuner...

ok got it, thx. perhaps your smog testing stuff is less visually intensive up there? as I wouldn't even want to roll into a bay with a modded intake down in kali... these days

don't have visuals up here in Ontario, or at least no test centre looks, OBD2 plug-in for 1998+ cars, 2 speed idle sniffer test -1997.
Looks like the EPL solution is plug and play anyway...? I had an EVOMS airbox, swapped out for a stocker

Rob, fwiw, I run the stock MAF with a fully smog compliant set up and in 20k miles including over 100 hard track hours, I've never blown a MAF or had any issues (knock on wood). This is on a 590whp set up at 1.25bar 91 octane tune..

Hey John,
Thanks for the datapoint, I also don't have any MAF-killing issues but what we can potentially gain here is finer tuning in the high RPM/Load range...based on my datalog's, our MAF's get maxed out around 5000RPM at WOT(mine anyhow, yours should be even lower due to higher HP/flow) and so the tune has to be more reliant on other sensors to fill in the blanks...there may be more power/consistency/safety by doing a MAF upgrade
Cheers,
Rob

Seems to me running out of MAF is as bad as what folks are claiming MAFless is. So happy to be going standalone but I'll need a MAFless on my DME for my inspections <shrug>

Loosing resolution up top isn't the end of the world, the DME still knows the air density its dealing with(vs. maf-less)...beauty of a MAF car is the ability to drive it anywhere/anytime without any need to retune the car to compensate for conditions..

If the MAF is maxxed out it doesn't know the density because it doesn't know how much has been ingested or am I misunderstanding you? Speed Density, unless you change the VE of the motor, isn't going to need a retune. Not for altitude, not for temp. I will agree that inferring airflow might not be preferred but it does work and comes with no intake restriction penalty or tricky plumbing problems. Many OEM vehicles have run this, to include turbocharged cars, without issue. Stricter emissions and better MAF sensors have likely made MAF the goto choice for OEM applications but for an aftermarket ECU I'm not sweating it at all - especially with an ECU capable of learning minor corrections...

correct once the MAF is maxed the true flow/density is unknown, but up til that point the DME has something to base the rest of the map off of...
Modern standalone's and S.D. tuning definitely work, but typically MAF systems give the most 'OEM'/all-rounded setup...all depends what you want from the car, 600hp street/track 996=MAF...1500hp monster 996 standalone/S.d./mafless
