Why doing your homework when choosing a tuner pays off
Why doing your homework when choosing a tuner pays off
Not that this is really news for most people on here, but over the years I can't stress enough how important it is to find a dedicated shop to work on your car.
Let's be honest, anyone can get any part. The results when things are working are also pretty much at parity from one place to another. Its when things go wrong your decision kicks in.
The other day I was driving to Philly, about an hour into the trip when the car tosses a CEL and cuts power. Immediately I get a sickening feeling in my gut, thinking "fu*k, why did I do all these mods". About a minute later I call Garth at Undercover, mind you its 5PM on a Saturday, and he picks up right away. Walks me through a few diagnostic steps, rules out some likely culprits, and concludes that his best hypothesis is that I'm out of fuel.
For whatever wonky reason my fuel gauge stopped reading at a 1/4 tank remaining. I walk to the gas station, buy a 2 gallon fuel canister, and return to toss the gas in the car. It starts up right away, no CEL, and drives fine.
Luckily it was a simple quirk. Drove to the gas station, filled up, and the gauge went back to normal function. The moral here is, if Garth didn't answer my call on his day off I would've assumed the worst and had the car towed to him ($150+), taken a cab back home ($100), and my weekend would've been ruined. Instead, a small inconvenience and I made it to Philly as planned.
This post is not intended to be specific to UC, but there are many vendors on here that are known for their customer service. I've heard it countless times, Shop XYZ will do it for half of what ABC is charging...don't let penny pinching sway you away from one of the most important decisions when modifying your car

luckily nothing bad happened, staying on highboost and running out of fuel can lead to injectors taking a dump. I dont trust my fuel gauge, I usually go by mileage. It was really funky when i bought the car, had to fill the car all the way up to get the right fuel gauge reading... It fixed it self.

Lol yea, that's about it. The gauge not working never crossed my mind, and I jumped to something far worse
of course! just part of the human condition! .. when the car was just fine

good news

once it gets under 1/4 gas gauge basically stops working and the car estimates based on throttle input etc. estimation doesn't work very well with big injectors and standalone just be mindful of that and you will be good to go !

VERY good to know! Thanks.
Lol, thank for the head up. So does that mean you at the gas station every other day?
lets put it this way:
rarely a day passes when I haven't topped off. last was yesterday at 445 pm
was 1/4 tank low, and that was my usual 30 min sunday pm drive. it was full when I began sunday from my Saturday top off

!!

Ouch, I knew the ProEFI tweaked the gas gauge to solve an issue with proper readings but never know that under a 1/4 it estimated instead of giving real readings - that could indeed be an issue for a big injector car! Going to have to watch that myself I fear, cannot wait to get this project going...
