Yes they can be modded very easy. 86 is the best base to start from to build up a good car, they are the lightest and are the only year with forged rods.
Ryan if you dont mind me asking what did you pay(pm me if you want) I have been thinking about selling mine (chips, konis, weltmisters) and was curious.

Congrat's Ry! Lots o' fun, those cars. I almost bought one a few yrs back, but got a '95 968 instead (3.0l 4cyl), same basic car. Great balance. If you set it up well for track, you'll be shaming cars costing 15 times the price no doubt.
Give a call to Black Forest down here in SD, John's the owner, friend and a great guy with 944's and 944t's. He has one of his own that he tracks and is very trustworthy with service, setup, etc.
Additionally, if you want to talk serious mod's, it'll be just as expensive as with any Porsche, so be careful. Try to get used stuff if budget's tight, as long as the items are in good shape. When I had my 968 at the track, Dwaine from Vision in OC interested me in his 944T "test mule" car for Kokeln equipment. The car probably had $30k (not incl the cost of the car) in powertrain, coil-over suspension and other mod's in it, including a seriously built motor, baffled pan, knife-edge crank, forged pistons, carillo's, upgraded turbo, ecu, exhaust, etc...and he would've sold the car for $15k with a freshly re-built motor. If you want to have a nice-looking streetable car, maybe get a second car like that, transfer things over and sell the mule with stock parts for a few thou and you'll beat the math for perhaps the first time in Porsche-upgrading history!
Edit: .....or, you could just put in a roll bar, get spare OE wheels w/sticky tires, make sure the engine's serviced and call it a day for now.
