997GT2 transaxle

Trying to judge current market, might be looking for one...What is a good used 997GT2 gearbox worth? Availability?
My Dad is buying a 996TT, tiptronic we plan on converting to manual, considering using my 6GT2 box in that and getting a 7GT2 box for mine.
TIA
-Rob

I know I'm better off searching, but in a nutshell what's the difference between the 996 and 997 transaxles? I know the mainshaft is supposedly stronger, but what else is there?

+1 mainshaft, the slightly longer gearing is the main advantage to me, however the stock 997 LSD's are junk
I view it as killing 2 birds with one stone, give a TT a better trans with good LSD and I get a longer gearset trans for my GT2..also 'forces' me to install a streetable clutch in mine since I have it apart...
of course it need to make some sense financially...

Why not have your transmission built custom from Bill Rader Motorsports?

Then you can do all custom gear ratios and what not and it will be less then a oem 996 GT2 gear box i would venture to guess.

not against that idea, but still need a manual box for dad's TT...he doesn't need anything special (but LSD is real nice to have) so my gearbox would be a good retrofit for his car...
neither of us want big power(<600whp), so a 7GT2 box with Guard LSD ramps and plates would be perfect for me

Why not just buy a manual TT and avoid the headache of converting?

purchase right was RIGHT! and add to that it's hard to find a decent 996TT here in Canada, regardless of price. Hot market here(I've been hunting for friends too).. Current exchange rate (= duty, tax etc.)= +40%, makes American cars undesirable
stock 6spd TT's have a poor shifter, poor clutch, no LSD.... Tiptronic TT's already have a GT2 P.S. pump...
The work is easy for me, it's all about the numbers.

since a 996 gt2 trans sells for 15,000$ and up i would hazard a guess the 997t2 would be even more expensive.

Guard/GT Gears said the last 7GT2 trans known sold at $18k...even if we installed that box, the car's cost would still be $ par or below a similar 6spd TT here won't be the route we go, but considering other options to hopefully get similar effects for less $...

Bill Raider has many options, from stock gearing/main shaft replacement to straight cut gears so you have lots of options.

use a 996 tt trans build it with 997t2 parts (4500$ or so plus labor) add powder hounds diy cooler setup and a wavetrac (1200$ plus labor) and your set. this will hold close to 1000 hp and half the cost of a gt2 trans. drop yours in your dads car

another idea present by Guard was using a 6GT3 box as-is (refresh LSD)
...an idea I spawned off that was, find a tired GT3 box and re-do the internals the way I want and use that box in my car and put my GT2 box in dad's TT..
or, just find a TT box and install a LSD in it and call it a day for the TT...

my experience has been that anything with "GT" in the description adds significantly to the cost. don't think a gt3 trans "as is" will hold the torque produced by a turbo car. also while thinking about this will the factory dme accept that theres a manual trans were an auto was? i know you can drop the awd with no effect from a manual but an auto can't be made rwd due to all the computer sensors. food for thought

off the top of my head you need clutch and brake pedal box, trans, clutch, flywheel, cables, shifter, console, neutral safety switch, slave setup, master cylinder , reservoir, power steering pump and reservoir(if your not using the gt2 setup) petosin lines from the reservoir. the trans will seem cheap after pricing all this!
