Trans install Horror story
Trans install story
I just had a new gearbox built by one of the best, with some really nice stuff in it. Had it installed by one of the shops here. When I got it back I knew it wasn't right a lot of chatter and vibration, the shop said it was just the type of clutch that was installed. I knew different, right before the trans came out everything was replaced and rebuilt with only 2000 miles on it, It was one of UMWs clutch kits which had been awesome, for 45K miles of driving and was working great. It seemed to be getting worst then last sunday was on the freeway and it went to the floor. One of the bearings had been left out of the install and the throwout bearing was all cockeyed and it had ruined everything! Even the trans will need to be machined cause it was ovaled out. What this will cost would have bought a lot of lifts and tool. I just talked to the shop that took it out for me and will go take pictures Monday. Haven't talk to the shop that installed it yet will be interesting to see how they back their work. This isn't going to be cheap!

As someone who just went though a court case to resolve issues with a shop that did bad work I feel for you. If the shop that caused the damage won't own up to it just remember you have rights and the law is behind you. I really hope it doesn't come to that though. Good luck!
Wow, that sucks man. It does happen to good shops too. Mine didn't align the gearbox correctly when changing out a broken 3rd gear, so it caught every time I upshifted. I took it back, they removed and fixed it, no questions asked. Hope this works out for you. Between your Turbo and your Vette, you've had more than your share of issues.

Between the 2 I'm about ready to Quit all things Motorsports. This is a good shop that I really like hopefully they just stand up and fix it it will be to their credit, I know things happen but it's very frustrating.

I take it a bushing was left out of the case where the shaft for the fork goes? And the shaft was only supported on one side and wallowed out the case? The fork has 2 bushings as well but if one of those was left out it shouldn't affect the case.
As we talked before, it's how you will be taken care of by those that did the install. Wishing you the best!

I don't think I do, what does he do?
I think he's retired now but an amateur racer. Was into vettes back in the 70s, then he got the number 3 1995 cobra r that he loved.
I think eventually he raced a c5 but last I heard he was into Porsches now.
His profession was as a hair dresser/teacher. In fact he taught my mom how to cut hair again back in the 70s.
He let me drive his cobra r when I was 16, he's a family friend. Ironic, but none of his sons had any interest in cars at all.
I don't think you should know him... Just wondered if you did. I was born in slc, went to college there and my parents were born and raised there.

The shop says they'll take care of it! They're even going to the other shop and pick it up no charge. I've just had such bad luck with shops doing the right thing. It's nice to see there is one that will stand behind their work. I had a feeling that they might.
Great to hear they're taking care of you the right way. That's how to run a business.
I can vouch for BBI out here after they replaced a new water pump that went south on me. They R&R 'd it right away.
