997 Shifter Install & Cables
997 Shifter Install & Cables
Ok, I have driven around my 6 lightly since doing the install. It goes into every gear but I am also noticing that it is a bit notchy which I did not expect with an OEM 997 (non SSK) shifter.
When I did the install I used the marks/thread count rather than the green shifter stay that I have as the marks would have been about a quarter inch off for each cable.
My question is, which should I go by, the shifter tool and let the cables sit based on that or the marks I made on the cables?
Cheers

Don't count the threads. That's the wrong way to do it. I'm not sure who perpetuated this counting of the threads business. It's plain wrong. The correct procedure is to have the gearbox in neutral, bolt in the shifter, install the centering tool, and finally clip in the cables. Where your cables clipped in with the previous shifter has no bearing on where they will clip in with the new shifter due to different tolerances and the simple fact that the shifters are not going to be identical.
Btw, the stock 997 shifter is not much of an improvement. 997SSK is a very good shifter albeit a bit plasticky, or go with the 997.2GT3 shifter which has metal bushings instead of plastic. The GT3Cup shifter is the beefiest and will give you the most direct rifle bolt shifts. The GT3 and cup shifters will have slightly longer throws than the 997SSK.

+1 on you have the wrong shifter also. you must get the 997SSK. not the std oem.
or better yet, get the numeric if you want to really upgrade and not stay oem 997ssk gt3 as pwdr suggests. that said, my 997ssk which i installed used for about 75 bucks has been flawless and vastly improved over the stocker. i'd *guestimate* it shortens throw by maybe 15/20%?
you'll hate the std 997 and continually ask yourself "why".

Thanks for the info guys. Will change the cable positions this weekend. I went with the OEM 997 because it was cheap and many had said that while the throws were only a little shorter, the feel was much better. It also helped that it fit into my self-imposed budget for the year
Ok, redid the cables using the shift lock. I can confirm that it is smoother now than it was.. and sooooo much faster to do. I spent more time picking songs to listen to than taking out the console and putting it back.
The throw is slightly shorter but noticeable but the biggest improvement is the feel of the shifts. Its no longer that mushy feeling of rowing through pudding but much more precise. I may upgrade to the SSK down the road but this is a vast improvement over the stock 996 unit and worth the $100 if you can find them used.
