I'm looking for options to quiet down my external wastegate outlets which currently dump to atmosphere. Has anybody tied them back into the exhaust or installed small mufflers on them? If so, I'd be interested in hearing about or seeing your setup.
Thanks
^^^mine are similar...To OP. Just fab up some connector pipes that will route it into the exhaust outlet. It should muffle the harshness of the open wastegates a little. Of course it will depend on your exhaust setup as well. If routed into exhaust pre-muffler...that would help the most obviously.
I have tubes that vent down kind of like that. Routing them into the exhaust seems like a hit or miss. Where do I go in, before the cats, after the cats, before the Xpipe, after the Xpipe?
This is what I was thinking of installing on the ends of the dump tubes. Heard of some Suburu guys installing them resulting in the noise reduction. They're motorcycle supertrapp diffusers. Just not sure about them creating back pressure.
Is this a bad idea?

I wouldnt do that....but thats me. I would be afraid it would cause boost creep issues.
I see people are using it though, what are some results?
Porsche 930 turbos used a small muffler on their EWG, but they're about $500 a piece and would require alterations.
I read a long Subaru thread and every person that tried the supertrapp diffusers were pleased with the results, including some big builds. Not one person reported having any adverse effects.
So, I just ordered a couple and I'm going to give them a try. If I remember, I'll do a before and after drive-by for anyone that might be interested.
Cool. Let us know how it goes. Curious to see if it causes you to tweak your boost control settings. BTW....what level of boost are you running and what size of external wastegate? Good luck man! Post some pics if possible.
Scot
I have Tial 44mm with 0.7 bar springs installed. Greddy controller low setting around 0.8 bar and high setting around 1.0 bar. Nothing crazy.
I have a regular oem clutch, so my boost will likely stay at those levels for a while. It's plenty of power for me the way it is now anyways.
What are you running Scot?

Same thing! 44mm gates with .7 bar springs. I'm using the ProEFI to control boost and have it set to the spring pressure at 10psi. I'm factory OEM clutch as well. To be honest though..the most I've seen so far is .2 bar!! Haha I just got it up and running a couple weeks ago so taking it slooooow for a while.
Oh ok, glad to hear it's up and running, hope everything holds tight for you as you start to push it.
I don't have any good pics of my set up but it's pretty typical like the others I've seen.
I am curious to hear what my car sounds like from outside the car though so I'll get someone to record a WOT drive by and then I'll post it here.
