Roll Cage Talk
Roll Cage Talk
So, I've been looking into a cage for my car id like to be able to run at all the events, for example Ti, Texas Mile, DE/track day events, and hit the strip in 1/4 mile fashion also.
Doing this in a safe and economical manner.
Looking for a front cage but removable, Rennlist member 1fastviking turned me onto this companys products: Safety Devices out of the UK.
The US dealer is stable energies link to product:

Now i like this because the front cage can be removed. as im not a big fan of having a frontal cage in the car when i don't have a helmet on my head.
I'm reading through the NHRA specs and the only thing i can see that they would give me trouble about is the 6x6 plate it requires the cage to be mounted with. Can anyone shed some light on this from experience?
or anything related to the subject. Goal is to be safe, meet the requirements to run without hacking up the cars dash.
Thoughts anyone?

I don't have the rule book handy anymore. With that said in order to certify the roll cage must be welded in place and the plate must be welded to the floorboard/rocker. I would have to check at what et the different requirements are for NHRA Cert.
here is the Rule book i was reading earlier:

For Texas mile, most half mile and Nhra, ihra events a bolt in 4point cage 6point harness, Hans and fire suit ,a snell 2010 helmet along with a minimum 5 lb bottle fire extinguisher will allow for a 200 mph mile run or 150/9 second 1/4 mile run. Any front cage and some rear cages will require padding and welding.

maybe they let it slide on grudge days or test and tune days just not for bracket/class racing? this is kind of the point of the thread as i want to know before hand.
Its certainly up to the track officials. Any nhra track wont allow a removable bar for serious bracket racing. My track is very easy to get along with and until you go below 10 they allow most cars to run. Are you just wanting safety or are you going to actively compete in bracket racing?
Any mile or half mile save ecta will allow 200 mph with the setup i posted

as far as the Texas Mile i'm still researching their requirements so far i've dug this up:
ROLL BAR/CAGE: All cars that are attempting speeds at or over 199 mph are required to
have a four-point roll bar at minimum. A six-point or eight-point cage is highly
recommended. The material and minimums are as follows:
FOR DOM: under 2500lbs: 1.50"x 0.095"
2501-3000lbs: 1.50"x 0.120" or 1.75” x 0.095”
over 3001lbs: 1.75”x 0.120”
FOR Alloy (CM): under 1500lbs: 1.375"x 0.095"
1501-2500lbs: 1.50"x 0.095"
2501-3000lbs: 1.50"x 0.120" or 1.75” x 0.095”
3001+lbs: 1.75” x 0.120”
5.5.1 The cage may be removable or may be permanently welded, or any combination
thereof, providing that all aspects of the cage meet these rules.
5.5.2 All roll cage surfaces that may come in contact with the driver should be padded
with high-density padding such as Ethafoam or Ensolite. It is recommended that
the padding meeting SFI specification 45.1 be used.
Any individual wishing to enter a vehicle which deviates from the rules listed above must
contact the Chief of Tech 30 days prior to the event for approval.
Over 215mph this is the requirements:
6.5 ROLL BAR/CAGE: All cars that are attempting speeds at or over 215 mph are required to
have an eight-point roll bar at minimum. The material and minimums are as follows:

2501-3000lbs: 1.50"x 0.120" or 1.75” x 0.095”

With that in mind a 4 point gmg chromoly bar will work for both. Grudge test and tune days the track officials will be amazed if you show up with a bar, hans , helmet and fire suit. You will need a different seat for track days. I use a corbeau lg1 which has openings for sub mount shoulders and it reclines. Fixed back work well to. A fire bottle is good but realize its only purpose is in the event your still awake after a crash. Thats were the sfi/3.5 or better fire suit will give you the 30 odd seconds for rescue to get to you if your knocked out and cant escape under your own power.
The hans in my opinion is mandatory. Strap in a 6 point with a full face helmet and your head is all that moves. Think dale earnhart. Its a must have piece of equipment

a new seat will happen thats easy.
finding a 8 point cage that fits into these rules is the not easy part.
It has to be custom made and unless your over 200 not needed. Remember at nhra if your serious 150+ requires a chute setup as well. Check out racequip.com. Good rated safety equipment at reasonable prices. I have a helmet anf fire suit 2 piece gloves and shoes for under 700$
NHRA rules are extremely strict if the track enforces the rules. I did it for years and they take the safety of the driver and others seriously. I'm with you though on it I don't want to do an entire cage in the car. I went the GMG route. I am a fan of a complete fire suppression system. We ran 2 10lb bottles in the Dart.
take care that removing the front side of the roll cage will need some time and attention as the full cage will stay very tight, not a thing to do very often.
I am looking for more safty for track, and still debating between half/full/full(removable front) cage

can try to find also Wiechers, they use them in DTM - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsc...nwagen_Masters
and can be FIA approved by request, they build also the clubsport version, half or full cages

Check out Piper Motorsport welded-in roll cages. They are in Northern Virginia. Top of the line stuff. I would guess they would know the regulations for the sanctioned event you are interested in, or could find out fairly easily. Mitch Piper and his guys are racers, so they understand the ins and outs, and the "no fail" theme of fabrication for the track. They did virtually ALL the work on my GT2 for its races, including the 2010 Targa Newfoundland in which it placed 4th over-all. Mitch Piper also co-drove the car in the race. They have fabricated several welded-in cage variations in my car to comply with different requirements, installed fire bottle systems, suspensions, and sequential shift to name a few. He also restored my interior to perfection in between iterations.
