Coil explosion

So my car is in the shop for pinning of coolant lines, water pump etc.

After a test drive the car is parked idled for a little before shutting down, after 5 min smoke starts coming from the rear according to the mechanic. He found where the smoke was coming from and splashed some water on the coil.

After removing the coil this is what was seen.

It looks like internal explosion of some sort, with 2 exits.

I replaced the plugs and coils about 2K miles ago and purchased them from ECS. All coils were removed, and I contacted ECS. They apologized and stated they would take them back, and I am getting OEM coils.

I had never heard of such and thing, and we are both scratching our heads what caused it, short, bad coil?

Anyway, I wanted to remove them all just in case and go with a different set.

Part number can be seen in picture. I previously had Beru and now went with Bosch, I think the OEM's are Bosch as well?

Anyone experienced this before?

Pretty insane B! Can't wait to see if anyone else has experienced this. I would imagine there was an internal short even something that occurred in the connector. It could have had something to do with it getting wet. I'm just glad it wasn't anything that got worse. I'm here if you need anything bud.

I've seen fly back transformers blow like that and other potted transformers too. An internal short where insulation breaks down a d it goes poof as the magic smoke escapes. Not good....

Not that everything that comes from Bosch is great, but so much has been said about parts forgeries lately... Is it really a Bosch part?

Yes this is really important.
Since ECS probably demands the faulty ones returned you cant return them yourself to Bosch, which would be a great way of finding this out.

I know both bosch fuelpumps and injectors are subject to forgeries, would be strange to think this doesnt happen with coils aswell.

Lucid: if you have the time make a quick call to Bosch and tell them what happened and see what they have to say.
Or demand ECS to repport this to Bosch.
Remember this could have caused your whole car to burn.

Now im not saying its a fraud, but when things that never burns starts to burn its highly suspectible.

So far nothing else has been damaged. Trying to locate a plug as the original one is somewhat destroyed. For now I've swapped to Beru coils, and we'll see if this happens again. Truthfully I am just happy nothing else happened, to the mechanic driving, or the car for that matter.
